I will be going on storm chasing and northern lights adventures in march. will this work as a base layer?

I was in Iceland last month (Sept). These worked beautifully as a base layer. Soft, comfortable and warm!

Would this be considered light-weight or mid-weight? I need mid-weight for temperatures around 45 degrees F

It may be light weight, but it's still warm.

Can these be machine washed and tumble dried on low?

I’m not sure. I washed mine and then hung them up to air dry. I wore mine in Alaska and they were great. Very warm and super comfortable.
