Everything You Need to Know to Create Your Own Wiccan Book of Shadows Wicca is a unique religion in so many ways, not least of which is the absence of a central holy text or scripture to follow. There are guidelines, such as the Threefold Law and the importance of respecting other people’s free will, but there are no detailed rules about how to live one’s life as there are in other faiths. There’s no single “divine source” commanding its followers, nor is there a hierarchy of religious leaders who all adhere to the same doctrine. In short, Wicca doesn’t tell you exactly what you must think, believe, or do. Nonetheless, there is an endless wealth of information that is integral to the practice of Wicca and Witchcraft—traditional myths, ritual protocols, incantations, magical lore, spells, correspondences, divination systems, and much more. And while the explosion of books and other resources related to Wicca has certainly made much of this information available, there’s still no one book that could ever contain all there is to know. So it falls upon practitioners themselves to discover and collect information as they see fit. This is where the Book of Shadows comes in. The Book of Shadows is where the real “hands-on” quality of Wicca can really blossom, as practitioners navigate their own paths to learning and growing spiritually. It’s both a record of your own personal spiritual journey and an encyclopedia unlike any other. As you build and develop it, it will have everything you need to perform rituals, cast spells, engage in divination, work for healing, use herbs and crystals properly, etc. In fact, a Book of Shadows is probably the most key piece of reference material a Wiccan can possess! What’s more, the Book of Shadows serves as a log of all of your activities, where you can record new spiritual and magical discoveries, noting ideas that resonate with you and magical techniques that have been particularly helpful. It’s also a place to express your artistic side through any creative writing or illustrations that you wish to include in its charmed pages. Most importantly, it is your very own holy text, reflecting your beliefs, inspirations, and anything else you feel is important to reinforce for yourself as you deepen your Wiccan practice. The DIY Approach to Spiritual Discovery Many who are new to Wicca shy away from the process of creating their own personal grimoire (a centuries-old term for what we know in the Wiccan tradition as a Book of Shadows). It can be easy to feel that you don’t yet know enough to be taking on such a giant project. But, as you will learn in best-selling author Lisa Chamberlain’s Wicca Book of Shadows , the point is simply to begin with what you know, and add to it as you go! Doing so will add a magical dimension to your practice that no spell or ritual ever could. In this guide, you’ll learn everything you need to know about creating and keeping your own Book of Shadows, which will grow with you as you progress along your spiritual journey: The evolution of the Wiccan Book of Shadows—a modern twist on the ancient tradition of magical grimoires Practical uses for a personal Book of Shadows and typical content found within it Advice and inspiration for creating your own Book of Shadows, with tips for choosing your materials, organizing your information, and putting your creative touches on every page How to keep your Book of Shadows hidden away from prying eyes Options for the 21st-century Witch: electronic and online versions of the Book of Shadows By the end of this guide, you’ll be inspired and ready to create a wonderful, magical companion text to accompany you on your Wiccan path! Wicca Book of Shadows, by Lisa Chamberlain - This couldn't have happened at a better time! I just bought my first blank book from a Wiccan online shop, to use as a Book of Shadows, and then, in checking my order, ran across an e-mail from a Wiccan website I belong to, which allows members to review e-books for free, and this is the first book on my list! I guess you might say, Goddess works in strange, and magickal ways. Wicca Book of Shadows, by Lisa Chamberlain, is a fast read, easy to understand, and yet full of good information. It covers the history of the Book of Shadows, from the time of the ancient Grimoires of Magick, to the coining of the word by Gardner, up to the technological age of computers and phone apps. Lisa Chamberlain clearly explains what goes into a Book of Shadows, what types of books to use, resources available, even types of paper and whether to use quills and ink, a calligraphy pen, or even crayons and markers, depending on how elaborate you want to make it, and how talented you are as an artist. She also discusses the pros and cons of using technology, and whether it is best to make a choice between handmade/handwritten, or computerized, or a combination of both. She even includes a short protection spell to protect your Book of Shadows from unwelcome observers, while allowing those you choose to share it with...and a list of some of the arcane ways you can confuse other people from reading it in the first place, such as magickal alphabets such as Theban, for example, numerology, sigils, etc. But, with this being a very basic beginner's book, she didn't go into much detail about the many arcane alphabets, but really, with the internet, if people are really interested, they can find out more about that online. I highly recommend this book for any beginning Wiccan, witch, or pagan who is interested in having their own Book of Shadows. And, I am looking forward to creating my own. Review: Guide you into your magic - Great beginner book that goes just over the basic of having your own BOS or Grimoire. If you want to get started and don't know where to start this is the book for you.

Great read
I feel as though it was very informative. It was somewhat repetitive but I didn't mind as it helped drilled core items in more. The book answered many questions. It was great for starting my book of shadows

Beautiful step by step guide for beginners/seasoned Wiccans
This book shares a vast amount of knowledge on how to compile your own Book of Shadows without strict guidelines. The author offers you various techniques to choose from while reminding the reader that no matter how you choose to put your BOS (Book of Shadows) together it will be the right way so long as it feels right to you. The book is thorough without being confusing or boring. With it only being 70 some pages it is full of useful information and a quick and easy read for anyone, be it a newly found Wiccan or a more experienced one. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking to start their own BOS or if you're like me and have to read every bit of information you can find on the subject of Wicca, witchcraft, or Paganism. Have a wonderful day. Blessed be!

So informative.
I found this book very informative and yet easy to read. I have been working on my BOS for years and still found more good suggestions for better writing and drawing aids then I was using. Plus it gives a bit of history on past BOSs. I am adding this to my Wiccan library to share with my/our new, growing coven.

A fairly quick easy read, but very informative
A lot of the big thick books that you pay $10-$15 for seem to have extra words that seem to be used only to make the book appear thicker. And that's not to say they don't contain useful information. Sometimes the information is difficult to locate. This book however was organized very well. It was full of information that can be put to use right away. I highly recommend this book and intend to look at others by this author.

It was a good basic overview
This book gives you a good overview of what it is and what it's for. It's nice that the author talks about different methods of keeping a book of Shadows. The little bit of history was interesting. However, I took off a star for the condescending tone over people who use computers instead of writing it by hand. She failed to take into consideration this is not necessarily a decision some people want, but have no choice due to health issues. I had carpal tunnel syndrome at a young age and arthritis by thirty. It's excruciating to write much these days. If I'm going to keep one, I have to use my computer. For others, computers and other electronic devices are the only way to hide it. Not everyone gets the luxury of being out of the broom closet. While the craft might be constitutionally protected in the United States, it doesn't mean people are open minded. Even the most so called open minded people look at you funny or step back if you say you're a witch.

Wonderful quick read!
This book was most useful! I've been putting off starting my own grimoire for a while, mostly due to all the factors involved, but this book cleared it right up! Lisa writes about all the different options you have in creating your own grimoire, from purchasing an empty book, binding your own, writing with quills vs regular pens, having an electronic version, pretty much everything! This book took away the pressure and intimidation of creating a perfect, huge book right away. Thank you!

The Book of Shadows by Lisa Chamberlain
This is a very complete and thorough guide to choosing your very own Book of Shadows. Lisa discusses the pros and cons of things you should consider before choosing your Book of Shadows. Everything and anything you can think of is in there: the type of book, the whys and ways to use one, materials, paper quality, artwork, master copy and rough drafts, magic alphabets, how to keep it safe, using technology, and, of course, the history of the Book of Shadows. After having read the book, I found myself in a bookstore, one of the places I enjoy being in this world, either I spotted ‘my Book of Shadows’, or it spotted me, I really don’t know… I took it and held it within my aura. Magick.

Great little book
I like it. It's easy to read and understand. The only reason for not giving it a 5 is that it lacks deeper analyzis of books of shadows. Like a deeper dive into how and why. But it gives clear basic information and is absolutely useful. The book itself is good quality paper, not a single little sqratch and just as I expected. The price is very good for what you get so Im not regretting the buy.

Useful either for a complete beginner or someone going back to Wicca, I'd definitely recommend reading this at the beginning of your journey.
