Great shoe for the wide / big foot.
I have both a wide and a big foot. I have a heck of a time finding a good shoe for running. These 578s are great. Very breathable, very light, nice wide toebox, and good comfort. I also appreciate buying an American-made product. The quality is above average. When I walk, my foot tends to walk more on the outside of the heel. If you looked at my shoes from the back, you'd see more wear on the right side of the right shoe and the left heel of the left shoe. This particular shoe was suggested to help mitigate my posture. It seems to help.My main concern about them is the way they end up looking on one's foot. They have a kind of orthopedic look. They look like some medical shoe. The style is a bit on a poor side. Also, they didn't hold up quite as well as I expected. The sole started coming apart on mine after about 6-8 months. They're a great shoe for the hard to fit foot. I applaud New Balance for keeping the industry in America and making a good product, but they need to upgrade the quality-- more stitching and less glue.

They're ugly but they work
Oh my feet, why couldn't you be normal? So here's my story: I have that feet condition, Over-Pronation I think it goes. I didn't know this at first, but I wondered why my feet hurt all the time: forget exercising, just walking from A to B. So I sucked it up, and spent the $ to see a foot specialist. Turns out my feet are wibbly-wobbly. Weight wouldn't be distributed evenly when they hit the ground, instead they would jerk slightly at the ankles causing my feet to have to brace and therefore feel that extra tension. He suggested I search for motion stability shoes. But there aren't a lot of them out there, and on top of that, I have rather large and wide feet, and I'm a girl! So you can imagine how much I hate shoe shopping. I must have tested out half a dozen different pairs before I settled on the M587.So here's what you want to know: I NO LONGER HAVE ANY FOOT PAIN!!! None, not one bit. I wear these shoes everyday all day. I wear them at the gym (mainly because owning a second and separate pair is too costly) and wear them for everyday activities. This is pretty revolutionary for me, not having any pain means I can actually be more physically active. It's ridiculous to sound so cliche, especially over an ugly pair of sneakers but: these shoes changed my life.In response to another commentators, who knows if they smell because I have put them through a lot in the past 6 months, including one really really wet day. I wouldn't recommend this particular pair mainly because of the look: massive and ugly. But you really can't put a price (or look) on not having feet pains right? Amazon has free returns on shoes so I recommend trying them out.And a few small things:-The shoes make me look 2 inches taller which i love!-The laces comes undone all the time, i should replace them...-I've never had a problem with slipping in them.-The fit is rather large and I'm wearing a size smaller than I'm used to.-I wear these shoes with an insert that I bought from my doctor, otherwise I don't think I could fill them.-The weight of the shoe it quite bulky so running in them is challenging.

Great comfort from the start
I've been wearing this model for about 9 years. A specialty shoe store recommended it because I needed the extra depth for orthotics. I have diabetic neuropathy and these shoes have been comfortable from the start with little time adjusting to new pairs (I've had at least 5 pairs). The neuropathy affects my balance so they give me some extra stability. The narrow back really helps. I wear them year round as the navy color is dark enough to not be conspicuous like white in the winter. The only complaint I have is that a few pairs have been squeaky- not sure if it has been the orthotic or the shoe itself (I did return one pair). I just ordered another pair after looking to see if there was anything new in the SL2 last. These are still my best choice.

Great Shoe At A Great Price
This is my third pair of New Balance 587's and I was elated to discover that they still make this great shoe and even more so that it's carried by Amazon. I have a serious over-pronation problem with my right foot and have to wear custom orthotics for correction and stability. I'm an active big guy with a wide foot who requires a good motion control type shoe. These shoes are solid and fit perfectly. I've worn out numerous pairs of running/walking shoes in the past and these just keep coming back for more. Because of their wide platform and relatively straight last, my orthotics fit perfectly inside. And with their wide footprint, I also use them occasionally for hiking or walking on uneven terrain as they're more stable than most athletic type shoes....at least for me. My old pair has now be reassigned to yard duty as my lawn is uneven and has a few ruts here and there that can torque my foot around. Some people have commented that they think these shoes aren't the most stylish. But I don't think their the ugliest either and I couldn't care less about that anyway......they do the job for me and I'll keep on buying them as new as New Balance keeps making them. I got a great deal on them from Amazon and coupled with the nice Amazon gift certificate my daughter gave me for my birthday, I'm a very happy camper.
