Not a good choice; especially for USA residents.

To start I'll say that if you live in the UK and follow everything in this book; you should be OK.This book is apparently self-published by the author who has a discus business. As such it doesn't appear to have been edited or proofed. Even taking into account the differences between US and UK spelling there are many spelling and grammatical errors, many of which can be attributed to being typos but certain words such as Corydoras and Tubifex are consistently misspelled. This suggests that the author hasn't done so much reading as talking to others and passing on word of mouth information which generally isn't all that good.It is obvious that the author doesn't have a formal education in biology (doesn't write scientific names correctly where genus is always uppercase and species is always lowercase) or chemistry but that doesn't stop him from writing on these subjects as they concern discus and giving erroneous information. He seems to be overly obsessed with killing beneficial bacteria. He writes that a sponge filter spending four hours in a plastic bag will kill all the bacteria (as if bacteria have a stopwatch letting them know it is time to die). If sterilization were that easy the hospitals would be celebrating; bacteria are notoriously difficult to kill. Many health issues are covered but with recommendations to use products that are only available in the UK. It would have been helpful if he had mentioned the primary medication in these products such as metronidazole so that equivalents could be found.I bought this book to expand my considerable collection of books on discus with the hope that a more recent book would have something new to contribute; particularly in terms of the newer strains but there was really nothing new here. The older books by Degen, Wattley and Schmidt-Focke are much better.

I really thought this was a very good and very readable informative book

I really thought this was a very good and very readable informative book. It was also interesting to read about his journeys. He put himself and his own passion for discus into the book. I loved it.

Good solid advice, and plenty of detail

Covers all aspects. There is a good flow to the information and the lay out allows easy access when you want todrill down into a topic. Nice writing style.

Nice treatment

A good detailed overview of discus keeping. I wish he would have explained his reasoning in terms of stocking smaller tanks with larger fish.

Could be better

I had so many hopes for this book, my path with Discus has had a few problems and some were addressed in this book. However, it is repetitive and not really helpful until near the end with the question and answer bit. The author has views on how things should be and some of these are definitely not right. We will have to wait for the definitive book on Discus but I don't think one has been written yet.

Good but not great

I really wanted to like this book, hoping it would be the holy grail on discus, however it is repetitive and badly published. Some of the photos are of poor quality and it's littered with obvious spelling mistakes. With all of that in mind, it is not worth £25, probably half of that. Shame, as I'm sure the author is very knowledgeable on the subject.
