a poignant exploration of human alienation
book is a profound and unsettling exploration of human existence, alienation, and identity. Its unique blend of surrealism, dark comedy, and poignant reflections on the human condition make it a timeless piece of literature that continues to resonate with readers. Kafka's ability to capture the absurdity and existential angst of modern life ensures that this novella remains a classic in 20th-century literature.

Part of the 100 books you should read.
What is there to say about this classic that has not already been said? It is a fascinating story that allows you to layer meaning and relevance at multiple levels. I was horribly shocked that it is becoming rarer offering at the high school level than it once was in favor of more trendy books.

A Profound Exploration of Alienation and Identity
I first encountered The Metamorphosis in university, and revisiting it in this new edition has been a rewarding experience. The detailed introduction, including a synopsis, character bios, and various scholarly interpretations, adds a rich layer of context to Kafka's work. The absurdity and dark humor that define the story are emphasized, offering fresh insights into its complex themes of alienation and identity. Phoenix Classics has done an excellent job providing historical background, making this edition more than just a retelling of the classic. It deepens the reader's understanding and appreciation of Kafka’s unique blend of humor and horror. In this light, The Metamorphosis can be seen as Kafka’s meditation on the loneliness that comes with being an outsider—a theme that continues to resonate with readers today.

Great job!
This is an interesting translation of Franz Kafka's novel, and includes a rather long synopsis of the story, bios of the various characters, and a good variety of interpretations this very odd story has undergone. Anyone who has ever taken a literature class has probably read this story, which is remarkable in every sense. Of course, anyone who reads it has to wonder what it's really about, and plenty of lit class debates have taken place about that very question. It is one of the great short stories--or short novels, depending on how it is presented--in world literature, and the translator--possibly inspired by the many commentators and translators who came before-- has come up with some interesting nuances that are different from what I remember. I think it's important to bear in mind that when Kafka read his works aloud for friends, he sometimes laughed so hard that he fell out of his chair! Some people are surprised that Kafka's work can in any way be considered humorous, but they should think again. I am a big fan of Franz Kafka--I think that he is one of the greatest writers who ever live--and I find his unique stories very funny in places. So did he, it seems. But they are also profound, and this story is no exception. It is funny in a way, but also harrowing. I like this translation, and look forward to more from this interpreter in the future.

cool interpretation of an old story
This was a unique interpretation of a story that has been retold in a variety of ways. The introduction hooks you in while the bizarre tale keeps you engaged. The story is a perspective on humanity and alienation that includes humorous notes and darkness. Every good story has an element of transformation and this one takes it to the next level with an actual metamorphosis. Think of "The Fly" with a bit more depth.
