Dad's Army - Collection

Classic, subtle British humor
There wasn't a lot to laugh about during the war but these blokes found just about all of it! The characters are well-conceived and extremely well cast. Some of the best old-timey UK actors were involved. And for us Yanks, it might help to know a little about the times - when the able-bodied lads were at the front and the Home Guard was left to some of the less able. It might also help to understand some sequences to know that road signs were deliberately removed in a lot of areas, in case the Huns invaded the Island.

Another abridged BBC collection for American Audiences
BBC has produced another abridged collection for American audiences. Far from a complete collection. For the complete series, one might consider buying the UK region 2 PAL format Complete Collection along with a region-free DVD player.

This is entertaining for those who appreciate a British sense of humor.
Most of the episodes are quite funny with a fair amount of physical comedy. The actors are all British so it is sometimes difficult to distinguish all of the words through the British (one Scot) accents. They usually speak quite rapidly.

A Great Collection
I first saw Dad's Army on PBS 'way back in the seventies when I was in high school. In the 90's I came across a few episodes at a video store on VHS, and remembered how much I enjoyed it. Therefore, I was delighted to see the DVD set on Amazon. This was a series running through much of the seventies, one of the Croft classics that made his name. The setting is Walmington-On-Sea, a village on the English coast just across the Channel when the Nazis were in France. The story is about a Home Guard company in the village, headed by Captain Mainwaring, the bank manager. The local butcher, the local undertaker, a couple of retired people, and the local black market expert make up the focal members of this small band. They go through all sorts of adventures and misadventures, replete with British humor. It's certainly comedic, but not goofy a la Hogan's Heroes. This was not a high-budget series, but that's not important when the writing and acting is first-class: remember I Love Lucy?I've watched the three CD's many times already, and the video quality is top-notch. The price is worth every penny for me, as unlike the old VHS tapes, these will last.

Memories
This set was an absolute delight that took me back many years to WW2. Dad's Army was always a laugh and represents much of what went on behind the scenes in the Home Guard. Now we need the whole series in the U.S. format

Great British Comedy
Great for the older-set. If you like British comedy and can understand some of the jargon it is a hoot. Those who do not understand that period of time or don't want to know what things were like at that stage of the worlds history, it's a bore. But those who are a bit more knowledgeable or want to learn about the trials of that time will get a kick out of the characters and the way they had to do things.
