Question 1

Will this thermostat replace one made for a system with aux heat/emergency heat? Should have 7 wires I believe. Needs to work w/heat pump.

I use this on my geo thermal unit system with aux heat/emergency heat. I had to have the geo guy come out, but that was because it had to be programed. The instructions that come with it showed how to do this, but I guess I missed a step. Has been working fine for about 2 years now.

Does it support emergency heat pump? How does that work? Does it automatically start working at certain temperature or d you need to turn it manually?

Yes it works with the heat pump as long as you have the electric heat strips included with your HVAC. The emergency heat switch is for turning the strips on and off manually. Additionally, the electric strips come on automatically if the heat pump is unable to supply the heat in your home that your thermostat is calling for. When this occurs you will see the words displayed on the thermostat “Auxiliary Heat”. The Auxiliary Heat will only stay on as long as the assistance is needed to warm the interior of your home along with the heat pump. This usually happens when the outside temperature is freezing or below. With that being said, it is best to keep the interior temperature of your home stable as much as possible. In non Heat pump units folks often lower the interior temperatures while sleeping (example by 8-10 degrees). Any thing more than a three degree variance (of actual interior temperature compared to the thermostat setting) when the unit begins warming the house in the morning, the Auxiliary heat strips will turn on automatically a will cause you to have a high than normal high electric bill. Another concern and reality with that thermostat is that it has a memory. If your heat pump is not working effectively due to loss of Freon, the electric strips will turn on automatically every time the thermostat calls for heat. You will know if this happens when you start receiving $400+ a month electric bills. An annual inspection and cleaning can help to ensure efficiency- most places charge $50 for this annual one time service call. Hope this helps. Tom Hughes

When auxiliary heats come on, does this show on the thermostat

Yes it will say auxiliary heat when it comes on, it comes on based on temp differential and or time to satisfy wanted temp.you will also need to know if your reversing valve is to be energized during heat or a.c..  most systems are energized in cooling.

What is the swing temp range? Can it be adjusted? Furnace is turning off/on too often.
