Works exactly as described. Great for simply checking whether an RJ-45/11 line (Ethernet or phone, respecitvely), a USB cable, or a BNC (old data line) is correctly configured or needs to be rebuilt or replaced. Just slap some batteries in, connect each end of the cable, and press the button; even amateurs can use it without getting confused!The plastic feels a bit cheap, and the zipper case is cheap pleather, but the unit doesn't break too easily, so for the price that's passable.

I've only been using it to test RJ45 patch cables so I'm only rating it on that. I haven't tried the other functions. It works great however if you have 7 and 8 switched it still passes it. When I slid the wires into the RJ45 connector I didn't realize the 7 and 8 wires flipped on me, I tested it and it said pass. When I tried to actually use the cable of course it didn't work. Retested it with this unit and it said pass again. I finally took a closer look and noticed they got switched. It does check continuity for those pins and WILL tell you if they are shorted but it won't fail if they are switched. As far as I can tell it checks the other pins correctly.

I purchased this tester because I was concerned with some cable connections that my cable guy installed. After running our test, all of the cables that were installed tested perfect. But, the cable that "I" connected to my computer was not the correct cable! This tester was a lifesaver, but really impressed my cable guy! He has helped me out of a lot of jams, so I bought another one for him. He said he's going to use it to do a random test with some of the new guys who are in training.

I've never had an issue with this network tester other than I lost it and have to order another. Have never had it fail due to plugging it into live jacks or POE enabled jacks. Works great for the cost.

I recently moved into a new home with a network switch in the basement and ethernet running to every room. But none of the cables were labeled. Most were wired for internet, some were wired for phone, and nothing was labeled, so I had no idea which cable went where or what it was wired for. This little guy made figuring it all out a breeze.I don't know if I'll ever need this again, but for the trouble it saved me on this one project, well worth the tiny investment.

I only needed it for a few wires because low voltage installer installed Ethernet cable for my IP camera wrong. This was a great way for testing if I had connected my cables in the right order. This works extremely easy with any Ethernet cable. It may not be the best thing on the market but for my needs, it was well worth the price. It was cheaper than similar in the big box stores.

For the price, a good unit for intermittent use - as I do. I wish both ends would show connectivity as some other units - this shows only at the base unit - but it is extremely fast and accurate so far. It also has an audio beep to aid the user. I would recommend this.
