You place cherries into the top/holder/tray. It is slanted so the cherries automatically roll into place. The tube like stoner is pressed down which then stones/pits the cherries. Extracting the pits into the clear container and expels the cherry out. I found that if the cherries are not firm, the cherry doesn't want to expel from the tray.

Q: How does it work on small sour cherry

It works fine. That's what I bought it for. We have a sour cherry tree. Love this tool.

Q: What are some of the reasons the Pitter will miss the pit?

Perhaps the gasket needs to be changed or the cherry rolled out before it went through the pitter but even the hand held pitters do not get the pits out every time.
