Needs pattern
It is great to help beginners, what would be nice is if it included a pattern packet with different design ideas.

Wooden Grids are Great for Beginners - Bring Your Own Needle
My son (7) wanted to learn how to cross stitch, but even a 14 ct fabric was a bit hard for him to hold and manipulate when just learning. The blanks were easy for him to hold and stitch on. That said I have a couple other thoughts on this product.1) The blanks are about a dollar each (ignoring the kit comes with floss), which is very reasonable.2) We used six strands to get good coverage. You may need to buy additional floss to use all of the blanks. Floss is cheap and readily available, so not a big deal.3) The needle that comes with the kit is cheap (and honestly useless). I happen to have a large sewing collection so I got out a large tapestry needle. If you don't have a large tapestery needle on hand, consider buying yourself one to avoid the hassle of the cheap kit needle that will break. This is why I took off a star.4) The kit comes without any patterns (and the description says so). Be prepared to get out some graph paper and draw some patterns for yourself.5) The kit comes without any instructions (and the description says so). As such, this kit is good for teaching a beginner, but NOT self-teaching as a beginner.Overall, my son has enjoyed me teaching him how to cross stitch using this kit. If he or one of my other kids wants to stitch more but isn't quite ready for aida cloth, I would buy again for the wooden blanks.

Great for beginners
I purchased this to start teaching my eight year old son basic stitches. He likes it very much. Definitely good for a beginner cross stitch. I placed colored dots on the wood to help him determine which colors to make his patterns. You can choose your own patterns when using this kit. The wood, while I have not measured it, is of decent thickness. We even stained some of the wood pieces before he cross stitched on them. It is not packaged as a giftable item, however, I think if you put it in a small box it would be fine.

Do not have a pre printed image
The ad for this project kit leads one to believe they come pre-printed with a design to stitch. They do not. They are blank. I bought them with intentions of using them to teach younger grand children how to sew. They are good quality otherwise.
