An affordable way to get more reach with little impact on image quality.
I bought this to use as an addition to my birding kit. I paired this with a 300mm AFS, D810 (510mm FX and 816mm DX mode) and it works very well in "good lighting" with little noticable image quality loss (using a tripod of course since the 300AFS has no VR) although BIF might be a bit of a stretch for most people. That's where my 150-300 G2 comes in. Auto-focus does slow down a little but that was expected and it's still not as slow as the 300mm AF. Wish it could be used with other lens I own, but it works for the purpose I purchased for. Image quality is better than the resulting images from my Tamron 150-600mm G2 when compared images at the equivalent focal length, and it's comparable to the image quality of the 200-500 AFS VR, and probably gets close to the 500mm AFS, but at a much more affordable price. Make sure you check the compatibility charts for your lens because it will only work with certain primes and no zooms whatsoever, you can't even mount it to them. Ensure your body can still AF at F8 and beyond with this converter attached. DX bodies generally don't.I also use it on my Nikon 1 V2 and get an astounding 1377mm equivalent focal length due to the 2.7 crop factor (on a tripod of course). Image quality is very acceptable even with only 12 megapixels (burst mode rocks). Overall I am pleased with my purchase, and for being a used product it arrived in like-new condition, no wear, dings, scratches, fungus or haze.If you own a compatible lens and body, save a few bucks and add one to your kit, even if you own a 500/600mm AFS, you can use this to extend your reach, or if you own one of those as well as a 300AFS, this will lighten your load when you travel and don't want to carry the beast just pair it with the 300, it won't disappoint as long as you adjust your expectations down a notch.Final note, the TC17E and TC17E II are exactly the same. There's only a cosmetic difference to correct an error made by Nikon, otherwise there is zero functional difference between the two. The TC17E III is altogether different therefore check the compatibility charts. Older lenses won't work on the TC17E III.

The good and bad for this teleconverter lens
After reading the reviews, and recognizing there is little cost between the 1.4 and the 1.7x, I decided to get the 1.7 for my 70-200. My goal was primarily taking pictures of birds, and I knew I had to get closer to get better shots than I was getting. I had an entry level camera (Nikon D3300) so there was that "crop factor" as well. The good: When the object is stationary or relatively stationary, my shots have definitely improved. Pictures of deer are greatly improved with the greater reach, and I am also getting many more clear pictures of birds than I had before--so long as they are stationary. The attached deer picture was blown up to a 16X20 poster, framed, and placed on our bedroom wall. There are many other pics that I am able to get, more so than before, so long as they are under these conditions. The bad: Yes, auto-focusing works but it is not adequate for fast-moving targets like birds in flight. Before I purchased the 1.7x lens, many of the reviews talked about the lens "hunting," and I now clearly understand what that means. By the time the lens has focused on the object or area when the bird is flying, the bird has already left; that has been very disappointing. I have a bird in flight (turkey vulture, I believe) picture attached----none of the pics are cropped---but my recommendation is, IF birds in flight is your interest, then spring for a 150-600mm lens. Although I am not a professional, I have worked with the 70-200mm lens quite a bit, and can track objects sufficiently, but when I use the teleconverter lens it can really slow down the process. Also, when a bird is on a limb/branch, the auto-focus takes considerable time before it is able to focus on the bird.I don't regret getting the teleconverter; it is what I anticipated it would be and was not ready to spring for a more expensive lens with longer reach. Perhaps you are in the same boat.
