Q: can we use small disposable propane bottles?

The fitting that comes with the Heininger 5995 fits only 5 gallon propane bottles or larger. I don't know of any adapter that might be available.

Q: Does the base get hot?

The metal ring base does not get hot. In fact I wanted to know how hot the floor under the unit became when the fire was burning. I was able to rest my hand on the floor under the fire pit while it was being used.

Q: Can this be used to roast marshmallows and hot dogs?

Marshmallows are fine. I don't know if the grease that might drop from hot dogs would burn off of the rocks. If no grease great.

Q: When I light the pit there is a mini explosion. Actually quite scary at times. Takes couple of seconds to light when turned on. Any suggestions?

Have your elongated Bic lighter already lit - then turn the gas all the way around to low - it helps prevent that "poof". If you turn the gas on and then light, some of it gets trapped in between the rocks and that's what causes the mini explosion.
