Q: Will this keep me from putting in a protein skimmer?

There is no filter that can replace a protein skimmer in a marine aquarium. Tip- in small aquariums an air driven skimmer works much better than a power skimmer and is much cheaper. I found a cheap 7 dollar air skimmer on Amazon and powered it with a 30 dollar high output air pump so I can adjust the air flow and tune the skimmer. Intake in chamber 1 with filter floss and whatever else you want to use and skimmer in 2

Q: Why can’t you just use a piece of lexan?

You probably could but why don’t you just buy this media basket 1, works perfect for my Fluval EVO. I even bought the media basket 2 for the middle chamber which is not a must, but highly recommend the Media basket 1. Price is worth it.

Q: Does it come with the sliding door ?

Yes, one of the long vertical sides slides out. The middle shelf is also removable.
