Q: Can you easily switch these from surround mode to stand alone mode?

On your cellphone you set up the speakers using the musiccast app. Once they are linked to your internet modem/AP you can quickly switch from linked mode [stereo] to individual all within thr phone app.

This is for one speaker. If you’re looking for a wireless surround setup, make sure your receiver supports it. The current 2018 Yamaha receivers are the only ones that support MusicCast Surround. I bought my receiver late last year (the RX-A1060) and it only supports wireless sync, not wireless surround.

You mean rear, as in 7.1? No. You can use them as surround speakers in a 5.1 system, which is how I am using them.
