Q: How deep is each pot?

Each one is roughly 6 inches deep

Q: What is the center hole for? it almost looks like a pvc pipe should go down the center.

This is what I was thinking and wondering about...why does it look like a pole should go down the center? Did you ever figure it out? How is the planter working for you? I just put mine together today.

Q: How much and what type of soil is recommended?

Ordinary potting soil or miracle grow

Q: Does it work well growing lettuces ?

I think lettuce should work. I have basil that is growing in abundance, chives, cilantro and strawberry’s all doing great as well. I recommend using vermiculite mixed with potting soil to keep the mix loose to take daily watering effective. I also occasionally put in the little Jobes plant fertilizer spikes to give a little boost to growth.
