Yes , the remote sensor is designed to go outside so that it can report the temperature outside on the indoor unit. You can also put the remote sensor anywhere you would like to monitor the temperature within 200 feet of the base station. Q: can i buy remote sensor only?

Mine came as a set. Look online at Amazon where I purchased mine.

I'm going to start by saying I returned this product for a full refund and purchased a different brand but I can answer your question. The white unit you see in the picture goes outside. It's best to keep it no more than 100 ft away from the inside unit. The outdoor unit transmits readings to the indoor unit wirelessly. You should keep the outside unit sheltered from rain and snow. I retuned this because I didn't think it was easy enough to see and read. After returning this model I purchased an "Ambient Weather WS-8600 Weather Station Clock with 256 Color Changing Wireless Temperature Humidity, and Barometer Display (Black)" which I have been using for almost 2 years now. I extremely happy with it. It gives me indoor/outdoor temps, outdoor baraometric pressure, and indoor/outdoor humidity. The clock and alarm work great. It comes with easy instructions and is not hard to set up. It's extremely easy to see. You can even set the background colors to suit your visual needs. I hope this helps.
