Most excellent tea kettle!
I bought this tea kettle in April of 2003 on amazon after (embarassingly) hours of searching the web for the ideal tea kettle. I wanted something cool looking, gorgeous and efficient for a permanent setting on the cook stove. This is it! The design is great and is very high quality. The water heats to piping hot quickly and the kettle call is loud enough to make me come running. I use water from a water bottle dispenser for it so it takes a little manuevering to get the handle-operated spiggot into the pour spout but it works fine. If I was going to add water to the lid, it would take a little doing because that lid fits on there pretty tight. Turns into a total one handed speedy operation. After about 2-1/2 years I had to tighten a screw in the handle but easy enough and its still going strong for a large family of teens who like their hot cocoa, and adults who like their tea, on a regular basis. We never had to use a hot pad as other reviewers mention and never had a lick of trouble with the train whistle (I had even web-shopped for the perfect whistle). I figure that in a few more years I might wear it out from daily use or it might get rusty but I give it my highest rating and highly recommend it!

relief for sore hands and a wonderful whistle
Another Amazon[.com] reviewer praised this kettle for being so easy to use in spite of her arthritis and I bought the kettle on this recommendation. I was not disappointed--the kettle is easy to fill, hold, and pour, because of the clever mechanism that opens the spout as soon as the kettle is tipped. The handle is soft and gently curved and the kettle does not slip when I pick it up. The end of the handle also doesn't dig into my wrist the way other kettles' handles do.The steam seal is tight, too, so there's on change of being burnt by steam as you pour. I virtually never remove the lid--I refill the kettle through the spout.A few others reviewers criticized the whistle. I have to disagree--this whistle is a gentle but loud two-toned hum and is easy to hear. Depending on how much water is in the kettle, it emits a loud, low hum or simultaneously two hums of different pitches. It's simply not the high-pitched screech of most kettles, and so it takes some getting used to listening out for.The kettle is also easy to clean--there are no tight corners or small parts that are out of the way and so get dirty easily.

Best Tea Kettle
I bought this for my daughter because I have had this same tea kettle for years. Very durable. Heats so quickly. Looks good, whistles loud, handle stays cool. I waited months for it to be available. Only tea kettle I would buy.

Nice Kettle, note the product documentation and use common sense
Update 4 January 2023After more than a year of daily use, this kettle is still going strong and the inside had some small water marks from normal use. A light wash with some vinegar cleaned it up and its looking new again on the inside, general "maintenance". Nothing mechanical has broken and nothing has melted. The stainless steel finish can be harder to clean, Barkeepers friend is your friend to bring that new kettle look back. Our relatives who have the same kettle, in their new house have a larger stove with larger burners, I assume they used the large burner with the kettle, and the spout did melt a bit, still no signs of rust. The handle was starting to feel a little loose, a quick tightening of the screw that holds it in place sorted that out.Still a great kettle, if you don't want to worry about which burner you use with the kettle and you have a tendency to use the a burner where the flames run past the edge of the base, this kettle isn't for you, that spout will melt, unfortunately.Update 13 April 2022Purchased Oxo Brew Uplift in December 2021, posted review January 2022, in February it had small signs of rust. Contacted Oxo customer service, great customer service, kettle was replaced within a week. New kettle has no problems, in use daily for longer than the original one purchased, no signs of rust and still looks new on the inside. Still love the kettleThis is a review of the Oxo Brew Uplift kettle with the spout that opens when you lift the handle. It seems like there are other reviews here that may describe Oxo's other kettle with the manual spout.Love this kettle, used it daily for about 1.5 months while I was living with family that had this kettle for about 2 years. When the time came to look for our own kettle, this one was certainly on the list to get. we use it on a gas range, cant comment on using it with hot plate or an induction stove at this point. The first thing I checked was for signs of rust inside their kettle... none was present, and it was still surprisingly clean with the shiny stainless steel bottom. I thought the bottom of the kettle was thin, but it didn't bother me as it probably helps in faster heat transfer. The pouring mechanism worked well, it was the first time I'd encountered a kettle like this and was initially intrigued. Once you get used to it, its a breeze, experiment with different positions on the handle when pouring, filling etc. I never felt that the mechanism was unsafe to use, nor did I encounter hot water being forced out of the spout like this brand's other kettle with a manual spout.I do find the lid a little tight, I'm hoping this will loosen up a bit with use. Note that if you don't put the lid on properly, the kettle either won't whistle, or the whistle volume will be reduced. This is due to the pressure that is needed to force the hot steam out through the whistle, if the kettle is bleeding pressure because the filling lid is not put on properly, its not going to whistle or whistle loud enough.Ahh... the melting whistle issue. I read many 1-star reviews on this issue, I believe its a non issue if you use a little common sense and use the right burner size for the kettle as stated in the usage guidelines. If you're putting the kettle on the largest burner and the flames extend past the base of the kettle, you're using a burner thats too big for the purpose. If you place the kettle uncentered so that spout is directly above the flame, of course its going to melt, pay attention and read the usage guide. Its the same as using a small pot on a large burner, those handles are going to get seriously hot, and if they're plastic, will possibly melt right off as well, its not the product at fault. Perhaps Oxo have made a slight product change and used a more heat resistant plastic now in 2021 / 2022, but it certainly isn't an issue with our pot purchased in 2022, not an issue with a family member's pot purchased in 2020.Filling the pot... yes its tricky filling through the spout, and if you're used to doing that, this may not be the kettle for you. Refilling an already hot kettle could be tricky with the hot steam and tight lid, we don't often need to boil more than one pot of hot water at a time so it hasn't been an issue for us. We also empty the kettle into a thermos flask so that we have access to hot water without having to re-boil water, that helps the issue and saves on energy usage. By the time we need to boil water again, the kettle has cooled sufficiently.

TOTAL DISAPPOINTMENT
This is the 2nd Good Grips Teakettle that we have purchased. Our OLD kettle was enamel covered and not stainless. We liked it, but the plastic lid had melted (couldn't be replaced) and the metal joints started rusting. After months of usage, our newly purchased stainless model is going to charity for the following reasons.1. The stainless kettle makes a constant loud hissing sound when heating water.2. Plastic lid melts if your not careful where you place the kettle on the burner. The instructions warn you about using large & x-large burners on modern gas stoves. (Good luck on getting a kid to remember that...)3. Whistle sound is so soft that it's worthless unless your standing near the kettle.4. It doesn't take very long before the stainless finish starts to spot and weekly cleaning is necessary. Some spots don't even come off with special stainless cleaner. So my wife just went to Bed Bath & Beyond and purchased a $50 Calphalon 2 qt. Enamel Tea Kettle. It has somewhat similar features as the OXO. However, it has a loud all-metal whistle that doesn't melt. It comes in green apple, red, black & white enamel. It also has a cute shape.
