Q: Can a 15" MacBook retina fit on it while in a protective base & lid cover too?

I think so. I have a 13" but there's plenty of space, and it's a good solid frame. Thinking about it - I have used it for my old 15" once or twice and that worked fine.

Q: Will this hold an iPad Pro 12.9 well? I'd like to use it as a drawing stand

The 12.9 iPad is a similar size to the 13" Mac book pro which fits the stand very well. Although I bought the stand to get the keyboard at the right angle for comfortable touch typing, I think it would also be a good angle for drawing. It's a well made piece of kit that also looks attractive - I am very pleased with it.
