Well made, well featured and good quality.
I needed a DAC (Digital to analogue converter) to run my TV into my stereo system that has no optical inputs. So: To use your TV into a stereo amplifier you need: A DAC, optical lead (Toslink) and a pair of phono to phono leads. If you want to input a Coax digital lead from your DVD / Blu Ray player you will need a lead for this.Previously I had used a cheap little black box device to do this, there's loads about priced around £10.I was never happy with the sound from the cheap box and decided to buy the Avantree DAC and bite the bullet of the £24 cost. I am very happy that I did. This 'improved' model is the one to get as there are plenty of reviews for the earlier version that show up some shortcommings. It arrived and I plugged it in straight out of the box. Connected the supplied USB power lead to a USB socket on my TV, connected the supplied optical lead in, connected the phono leads to my amp and a digital Coax from my Blu Ray. All the leads go into the Avantree and are clearly marked. The unit is very well made from metal and is small enough to tuck away, though you might want to keep it accessible as there are two switches you might want to use. One is a power on/off switch, though I just leave it on as the unit turns off when you turn off the TV and on when you turn on the TV. The other is to switch between the optical and coax inputs. There is also a headphone socket if your TV doesn't have one (Output only, you can't plug a phone etc into it.) Importantly there is a volume control which controls the headphone output and the RCA (Phono) output. I turned this up to full as it makes it easier to adjust the sound on my amplifier. My old unit did not have this feature and I had to turn the amp up a lot more to get a full sound. My ears can't tell if there are any faults with the sound. No bright laser like light either, just a discreet green light to let you know its on.Did I get the sound quality I wanted? A qualified yes to this, sound is very good and clear with no loss of quality. A recommended product and yes I bought this with my own money and I am not connected to Avantree in any way.

A relatively low priced DAC that works in a high quality system.
Given the low price of this DAC relative to the cost of DAC's in the world of HIFI, I have been impressed by the sound quality. I have used the DAC to connect to my TV with the sound output going into my preamp/hifi and through to my speakers. It is connected to a high quality system and this small and stylishly designed DAC is performing well. I only have one minor criticism to make, and that is that I have had to turn the volume control knob on the DAC to maximum to get a decent volume through my speakers, and in order to get a loud sound when desired, I have to turn my preamp up to around 80 - 85% of full volume but this is nonetheless perfectly adequate. It should be taken into account in this review that I did not use the accompanying optical cable with the DAC but instead opted to use a QED optical cable to connect the DAC to my TV.

Functional, good quality audio with no discernible delay
Buying simply DACs on Amazon is a lottery. This was my third attempt to find a simple, cheap DAC for a particular application. This one served that purpose admirably - good quality output, nice range of output levels and no noticeable delay added to the audio chain. The build quality could be better (the green digital input switch is a bit naff) but it's been working perfectly for a few weeks now and I'm happy with it.

Does exactly what the sales blurb says it will
I wanted this to connect to a TV that has an optical digital audio out but no 3.5mm jack socket for a set of headphones. This works fine. Some of the Digital Audio Converters (DAC) do not have volume control so this unit with the volume control is everything i wanted in one small box. I comes complete with an optical lead and instructions. Though the unit is so simple it does not require them. I'm not an audio nut but the quality to my ears is great. I listen to the sound from my smart tv and love it.

Decent but limited
Works ok on firestick apps except for prime video because it doesnt support dolby( just annoying white noise), only pulse code modulation. Very slight delay from tv to external speakers.

A well designed digital to analogue converter
This was bought to replace a more expensive Lindy DAC, which after 4 years had started to produce crackling on the output from its co-ax connection.I am not an audiophile, but for me, this Avantree DAC provides good sound quality from both the optical & co-ax outputs, to my ancient Arcam amp.Unlike my Lindy DAC, there is no USB input on the Avantree DAC, so you can't connect a laptop as the sound source using a USB port, but I didn't use this once on the Lindy. The Avantree DAC is compact & feels solidly built. It is well designed, with all cable connectors at the rear. On the Lindy, the inputs were in the back of the device & the outputs at the front, which looked messy. A nice touch on the Avantree is the on/off switch, which I guess would prolong the life of the unit, if used to switch it off when not in use.Another nice touch is that the Avantree comes with an optical cable in the box. I haven't used mine, as I already had an optical cable in situ. The only minor downside with the Avantree is that the volume control knob sets the overall volume. On the Lindy DAC, the volume knob controlled just the headphone output, which makes more sense to me.

Great pice of kit
Heat pice of kit I can now upgrade to sky QHeld off upgrading my sky boxes as the small sky Q boxes only have optical outs, this little box has solved this. Easy to install especially as powered by usb (one on the back of sky box). Only downside is I have to turn volume on my sound system slightly higher than before and when I turned up loud the sound quality diminished but all in all solved my problem and happy with my purchase

Works well, sounds good
I replaced a cheap DAC with this unit in the hope that it would stop the loud pops and bangs we were hearing from our Samsung TV every time we changed channel or tried to watch anything on Netflix for example. I had previously used one of those cheap DACs in a small square box that cost about £12. This one is slightly more expensive and it's much better made - no pops and bangs thank goodness! The volume control is a bit pointless - ours is left on full volume and we control the volume from our speaker amplifiers as you would anyway.

Effective and well priced
Suits my needs for optical output of music from an Apple TV to a stereo amp in my office. Sound quality is decent. Small size fits into limited desk space well and light enough to stack. Shipped fast, good packaging. Only had it a couple of weeks so can’t comment on longevity but it looks well built.

Trasig

This is the one to get!
Excellent DAC product, exactly what I would have expected from Avantree. I used this converter to connect a pair of headphones to an older Sanyo flat screen TV that only provides audio output via a coaxial RCA digital audio interface. Using an RCA Y-splitter and a couple of RCA male-male patch cords from Amazon Basics, I was able to split the output of the TV between my sound bar and this DAC so that I don't have to disconnect one to use the other. The sound output was clear and crisp into my Audio-Technica ATH-M50x 32 ohm headphones, which I connected via the 3.5mm jack on the DAC. Volume control was a really nice plus, as the full output from my TV via the digital output was louder than I would like. The volume control on the DAC made it easy to dial down the sound level to the headphones to an enjoyable level. Bottom line, this product works very well for me and was extremely easy to install. However, I would suggest that Aventree make the product even better by using more readable colors with better contrast to label the on/off power switch and the coaxial/optical switch. The printing for these switches is small and I found the low-contrast color against the black plastic made it very hard to read, especially in subdued light. Other than that, this DAC is better than any of the other offerings I have tried, and I would highly recommend it. If I needed another one, I would not waste any time, I would just buy this DAC from Avantree. I'm looking forward to trying their Bluetooth 5.0 Oasis Plus products in the late summer once they start shipping, if they are anything like this DAC, they'll be awesome too.
