Amazing project

Gave this as a Christmas present to my sibling who a violin player that loves Hatsune Miku. (and also doesn't live with me anymore lol) By the end of the night he was able to play some basic songs on it and was eager to learn more. It's a little larger than I thought it would be, but that just makes it easier to play according to my brother. Great buy!My headline is a line from the box btw.

First, do your research. This is an electronic instrument and, while it is completely capable of playing music, it is quite challenging to get to that point if you aren't willing to devote the time to it. This is not a silly toy to hand your kids, children who aren't serious about it making actual music can and will make it make some horrible noises. That being said, this is pretty fun to play around with if you are a musician/musically inclined. It had a decent range and three settings so it can make quite a lot of different sounds. The notes it plays do correspond with notes and you can use a tuner to figure out where each note is on the stem. The difficulty comes from it being fretless and the sharps/flats are quite close to the other notes so this contributes to some less than pleasant sounds. It is possible to purchase stickers to mark where the notes are to lessen this, but it also is something that practice can help enforce as well.This is the larger edition of the otamatone and with it comes a higher price tag. I'm not sure that it is really worth $100 but it is a fun, strange musical instrument that people who enjoy unusual instruments will probably find amusing. I wouldn't give this as a gift to children unless they were particularly musically inclined (and likely to put in the effort to learn how to play it properly). I've found it fun to fiddle with, trying to play songs by ear. There are limitations with the range but it is still pretty versatile.Finally, this is the Hatsune Miku edition. It comes with a (removable) blue wig to make it look more like the virtual character. If you are not a fan of Hatsune Miku, have no clue who she is, and/or have no desire to have your otamatone wear a blue wig, there are many other editions of the otamatone and otamatone deluxe. I would suggest purchasing one of those instead of writing a review complaining about the theme.The Otamatone is a very specialized purchase and this particular edition even more so. Research the sound, learn a little about it before purchasing one, and you will be much happier for it. They aren't for everyone and a little bit of poking around youtube is likely to help you. While it is possible to make music with this, if you don't enjoy the sound of electronic music you won't enjoy this, even when played well.
