Q: If a large telephoto lens is attached to the gimbal rather than the camera base will there still be clearance when tilting toward the vertical?

This is a Sigma 150-600mm Tele Sport which is a hefty piece of kit. As you can see when you tilt the lens up the bottom side of then tripod bracket comes into contact with the gimbal at the lower horizontal swivel point. The maximum vertical angle is around 60-70 degrees from the horizontal depending on the exact config of your gear. Something to be aware of and I was if you are considering this mount, the first thing you must do is completely dismantle the mount and remove the glue like grease from the bearings. It's very difficult to turn in any direction if you don't. Just replace then grease with a modern silicon version. I knew i had to do this but was very pleased with the final piece of kit. Take about 30 mins to perform this change.

yes, it replaces the normal ballhead on the tripod, just unscrew the one you have on and screw this one on. I have used it with a Nikon 300mm/F2.8 lens without any problem. It is a sturdy gimbal and if handles really smooth with that kind of lens on at least.

The gimbal has a standard 1/4" or 3/8" screw thread for attaching the unit to a tripod so as long as your rail has the same size thread by means of which to attach it to the tripod, and a screw to attach the gimbal then I don't see any reason why it shouldn't fit between the gimbal and the tripod head to enable you to line it up with the nodal point. What I would say is that the Arca-Swiss style plate supplied with this gimbal, by means of which the camera or lens attaches to the swinging arm of the gimbal, has only one screw, which wasn't enough to lock my 150-450mm lens and prevent it from 'yawing' from side to side so I had to purchase an additional, longer, plate from Amazon which has two in-line screws which fit the threads of the tripod collar of the lens and attach it securely to the Arca-Swiss plate. Hope this helps!
