Poor job of securing product for shipping
I used to work for a custom frame shop and I used this product before. So, I was looking forward owning my own but this Logan 850 arrived damaged. Logan does a poor job of package and securing this product for shipping.

uneven cutting
Every mat I cut is a different size, I wish I could send it back, it is horrible, the less expensive ones work better.

Not Like Other Logan Cutters
The Logan Platinum Edge cutter is very different than the other Logan cutters. A few years ago I had purchased one of the lesser Logan cutters. The base was made of press-board, it seemed flimsy, and it was difficult to use.The Logan Platinum Edge is quite different because it was not originally a Logan but Phaedra Chronomat, a well-respected brand. As I understand, Logan put their stamp on it and changed very little else. Unlike other Logans, it has solid steel construction. It has easy to use stops with measurements in inches marked to 1/16th of an inch. The cutting blades are cheap and work well. When not in use, the machine is sturdy enough to lean against a wall. It will not warp. It has straight and beveled cutters opposite each other. There is also a detachable long arm for holding large mats. I purchased the 40" model (identical in everything but size to other Platinum Edge), which is just large enough for 32x40 mat boards. It's heavy, but I (a 5'2" 50+ woman) can just manage to carry it upstairs and to my van if I need to bring it somewhere. The first mats I cut had overcuts. It took me about 4 mats to learn the idiosyncrasies of the machine and turn out mats with perfect corners. The lines are straight. There are no hooks or gouges as long as you're careful to apply constant, even pressure. I added a large self-healing mat. That helps a great deal in measuring, lining up cuts, and getting square mats. I watched the video that teaches you to use the machine, but found it somewhat lacking. I still had to play with the settings to get perfect corners. It is consistently possible, though. I recommend also purchasing the Logan mat-knife and additional rulers.I love that I've been able to use the mat cutter creatively. I've turned off-the-rack mats into custom creations by adding more mats. I do a lot of creative cuts, though not grooves at this point. It has given my photography an edge it didn't have before in terms of presentation. For all this, I think I made a great choice. Using it has actually been great fun! It's wonderful for cutting 4-ply matboard. What I hate about it, though, is the difficulty I have setting it to cut 8-ply mat board. I rarely ruin a 4-ply board, whereas I ruin nearly every 8-ply board I attempt to cut. It's difficult to judge setting the blade depth for 8-ply board. Any adjustment in blade depth throws off my other settings as well causing unsightly overcuts that are difficult to compensate for (it's all guesswork). The thicker matboard takes a toll on blades. I find that it takes one blade to cut one 8-ply board. After that it's too dull to cut anything else smoothly. I wouldn't mind since blades are so cheap anyway, except that I hate ruining so many supplies to try to cut a single mat. There are add-on gadgets for cutting glass and grooves. I don't know how well those work yet because I haven't tried them. I do have experience cutting glass, and have found it's easy to ruin good glass with a bad cutter. That's why I've been reluctant to try the add-on gadgets. They weren't made specifically for this mat cutter, but were adapted to it. There are other cutting systems that handle a greater variety of materials, though most are quite a bit more expensive. If you plan to use a lot of 8-ply mats, this mat cutter is not for you. Look for something else, such as a used Fletcher. They're available for about the same price. If you will be mainly cutting 4-ply mats, this could be an affordable choice.I gave it 3 stars for it's overall capability. I'd rate it much higher for it's construction and ability to cut 4-ply mats.
