They serve the purpose.
I don't have fluorescent lights, but I get these to make them into bird feeders. They make really nice Finch and Chickadee feeders. I put six dowel perches through the tubes, so there are 12 altogether, and hang it just outside the kitchen window. Sometimes we'll get 12 bright yellow finches at a time on it, and they really light up the room!

These are awesome for DIY projects too. Reasonably good clarity.
T12 fluorescent tubes are 1.5 inches in diameter, so these T12 tube covers are roughly 1.6" ID (Inner Diameter) with a 0.025" wall thickness (25 mils). They are extruded tubes, with a faceted extrusion die. I'd guess the die they use has around 50 facets (straight lines angled together to approximate a circle). This has no bearing on it's use as a fluorescent tube protector, but it could have an impact on it's use in DIY projects that call for a clear tube. It is optically clear, but with mild distortion at the facets. To put this in layman's terms, if you put fish in these, they will have a slight fun-house mirror look to them. My DIY application is to add these to a dust extractor, on my CNC machine, so I can see the flow of dust clearly. It's perfect for my application, but it's important not to have too much restriction on the input. These are thin walled, so there is a limit to how much vacuum force they can hold up against. Enjoy.
