Q: Is this suitable for use with baby bath that has a seat in it?

Yes but I'd buy off a different seller as all the little white beading comes out of this and they got stuck in my newborns ears, it's very cheaply made

Q: How does it stay in place? I have the mothercare foldable bath tub for my newborn - does the mattress not flip over leaving the baby under water?

The mattress could flip over if you are not there to stop it, you need to hold it still. Usually myself and my wife are there for bath time and it isn't a problem. Baby would never end up under water unless you left, which of course you wouldn't. But it is a bit of a pain that you need to hold the mat while trying to bathe the baby, it would be difficult to do alone.

Yes, the weight of the baby submerges it. So baby ends up surrounded in bath water. My 2 babies loved it.

You will need a baby bath. Mothercare they do as well as amazon
