I worked on a line crew for a few years and as a result have some experience with a few different styles of grips. This grip is rated at 1 ton and that should be sufficient for the average DIY'er who might be stringing a fence wire or installing a guy wire on an antenna tower. However, I find it lacking in a couple of key areas.First of all, on a hard wound steel cable it has difficulty getting a good grip. I found I really needed to tap it snug with a hammer and then, because of the spring hinge on it, you must keep it under tension until you can take up the slack with your come-along or whatever you are using to tension the wire. I much prefer the 'slider' type grips where the whole length of the grip (usually a few inches) is in compression contact with the wire being pulled, not just the small amount of wire under the rotating jaw as is the case with this grip. Secondly, when pulling a larger wire the guard which slides down on the side to keep the wire on the gripping surface does not completely cover the wires egress off to the side. That can cause a lot of grief if the pull on the wire should go sideways all of a sudden.So, will it work? Yes. And it seems a solidly built piece of equipment. Is it the best design? Not in my personal experience.

This cable puller is very solid and heavy duty. It's made of treated steel, and weighs a ton for its size, and is very hard, good for heavy use. When you have something extremely heavy like a tree trunk or cable, this is an easy way to secure and pull the cables. On examining it, I'm not worried about it slipping or breaking under pressure. It worked great on supporting a tree log that probably weighed close to 1 ton, and didn't have any issues. But it is small enough it's easy to store in the toolbox. Good helping tool if you need any support with cables.
