Q: are there any inserts or compartments in this box? if not, how can I purchase it extra?

There are no inserts included, but they may be available from the manufacturer. You will need to measure the boxes internal dimensions and then choose which inserts will fit from this list: https://www.reallyusefulstorageboxes.co.uk/really-useful-insert-divider-trays-c102x2076715 Apparently, 2 dividers are available to fit the 20 litre box. Some boxes have deeper lids made for them. There are various divider trays that may fit inside the 20 litre box, but will leave space for other items, depending on the dimensions, but won't be an exact fit, i.e. you could use 4 of the 5 compartment trays, but they won't be quite as deep as the box itself.

Q: Is the height definitely 12cm high including the lid?

The lid accounts for very little regarding the depth of the box as it is recessed so that when the lid is in place, the recess comes into contact with the top edge of the box. If you are concerned about the internal dimensions of the box, they are: 610mm x 370mm x 90mm Internal, so the lid adds another 30mm (3cm) to the height of the box. That wasn't an issue when I bought it as it sits on top of my A3 printer, so it wasn't a stacking problem if you are considering stacking more than the one box in a confined space.
