Better than OLYMPUS.
I have owned many Olympus professional dictation voice recorders before this -with the most recent one: DS-9500, performance was very poor (very short battery life; micro USB charging port stopped charging in only few months; took too much time to find the recording you just did, etc. etc.) so I purchased this PHILIPS Digital Pocket Memo. I am very pleased with it -it has very good battery life, all the features work (after a little learning-curve because there are a lot of controls and settings to get used to). After you set it up to exactly the way you like it, it will do all you want it to do, the way you want it to do.With DPM8000--Indexing is much faster and more intuitive than Olympus, easier to insert and delete.-Partial-delete is simpler and easier. To be fair to Olympus, I should mention that there are a few weak-points with DPM8000 though: Compared to Olympus DS-9500, DPM8000 has more hand-noize. With Olympus sound is more comfortable to listen to with less treble-sounds (its sound is deeper), (though this may make DPM8000 more clearer-sounding for better transcribing -I do not use this for transcribing, so I haven't tested it for that). I wish DPM8000 could adjust speed of rewind and fast-forward, like DS-9500 can - it is too slow for my preference. As I continue use I am liking this more and more as I get used to using it. I find no glitch like other reviewers have mentioned.

Don't bother if you want to use this for dictation
I thought this looked perfect to be able to take dictation and just use the software for transcription. But my attempts to use the software were a complete waste of time. The software isn't designed for transcription, I don't even know what the software is supposed to do. When I connected the recorder to my laptop it just wiped out my recordings and they were gone. When I tried the speech recognition software, which requires a separate subscription, it couldn't recognize the recording on my device to upload it for transcription. A complete waste of my time. I have tried everything but now the return deadline is past so i am stuck having paid over $600 for nothing.
