I purchased this phone for my child as a first step into smartphone use. The Bark Phone has built-in safety features that are easy to set up and manage. I’m able to monitor messages, manage screen time, and track location through the parent app, which works smoothly.The phone itself is user-friendly and looks just like a regular smartphone, so my child feels independent, but I still have the oversight I need as a parent.Overall, it’s been a solid option for introducing technology in a safe and age-appropriate way.

I had the phone for about six months and then my child was unable to use the phone for a few months, due to treatment they were receiving for mental health. During that time I cancelled the service that was going unused so I would not have to pay the ridiculous cost of $60 per month for the very limited phone service. When it was time to reinstate the phone line, the phone suddenly “didn’t work with Bark” anymore despite being less than a year old and being a Bark phone! After being on the phone for a long time they finally said that it would still work (after trying to convince me that I’d need a brand new device that had gone up in price) but their engineers would have to reach out to me to fix things due to a problem on their end. This was after they had me do a factory reset and we unfortunately lost all the pictures my child had on the phone (they warned me that would happen but there was no other option because of the phone somehow being “locked” on the Bark software side). They then left me in the dark for days and I was not able to call due to their call center being closed on weekends. When I tried to cancel my service they said they typically don’t do refunds and that I was likely to still have to pay for the year subscription ($100) and a $60 charge for the month of phone that was never even activated due to issues on their end. They said they would transfer me to billing to see about canceling the charge, then they hung up on me instead. Definitely will not be using Bark in the future.

Overall, they system is pretty easy to use. The alerts start out a little aggressive. You get alerts for every little thing, but the system learns.Contact approvals default to reject so I've had to go back in and redo several. Not difficult but also not real intuitive. So if you're distracted while approving requests be prepared to have to log into the web page.The phone tracker has come in handy several times. Phones have a way of getting left on buses or in classrooms. It also comes in handy when your kid texts the grandparents to pick them up at school instead of riding the bus but forgets to let you know.We've found a few apps that don't work with the Bark parental controls.Overall, the pros definitely outweigh the cons. I would recommend it as a kid's first phone.
