Very good coffeemaker, but with design flaws
We received our reconditioned Cuisinart DCC-1400 in just a few days from an Amazon reseller and like the fact that it was 1/2 price of a new one. You don't get the gold filter included, and the warranty is shortened to 90 days, but my experience with refurbs is that they're as good as new, and the savings make up for the fact if they're not. Here are a couple of my initial reactions to this coffeemaker in case you're considering purchasing one.PROS* Very attractive with a slight retro look. Fits nicely into almost any kitchen decor.* Makes a delicious cup of coffee and the thermos keeps it hot without cooking. I drink it black, so if you use cream or milk, you might feel differently* No 6 oz. cup of coffee with this coffeemaker, like the new Mr. Coffee coffeemakers. Those claim to be 10 cups, but do so by subtracting an oz. from each cup.CONS* The water cavity is difficult to fill. There is no external method to see the amount of water you've added. Instead, you need to peer down into the cavity where there is a staircase method of how much water is in the coffeemaker. This was obviously designed by someone who got up on the wrong side of bed one day, and realized that no one at Cuisinart was actually smart enough to notice the mistake. REALLY bad design.* The clock dial isn't backlit. This means that the lights need to be on in the kitchen (or wherever you use this coffeemaker) to see the clock and to program it for auto mode. If this was a coffeemaker you bought at Walgreens on the cheap, this might be forgiven, but on a Cuisinart? All in all, I'd recommend it, but if you have limited eyesite, or an unsteady hand, filling this unit with water is going to be tough. The workaround is to get to know how much water to put in the carafe to then pour into the reservoir. The problem with this method is that there are no markings in the carafe, so you need to develop a sense on how much water you're pouring into the machine. I'd summarize by saying that the 1400 is a good coffeemaker, but with some unforgivable design oversights.

Loved it so much we bought it again
Had this model for 10 years, then it started slow leaking out the bottom when I filled it at night. Looked through tons of reviews for newer models, but came back to this one and still love it.Pros:- Thermal carafe works great, coffee still warm after 8 hours. We always set the maker up at night in program mode so coffee is ready when we wake up. A trick I use to ensure proper temperature is to fill the maker with water, then rinse out the carafe in hot water, otherwise the carafe has to use some of the heat from the coffee to warm up. Also, I always use the "1-4 cups" setting, this ensures the water heating element is hot before any water passes through it.- Coffee consistently tastes good, can't detect any bad taste from the machine or carafe- They have improved the pouring mechanism from our first DCC-1400, you no longer need to rotate the carafe at a 90 degree angle to get the coffee to pour out, more like 50 degrees. And the pouring spout is larger so the pour stream is more directional.- Easy to clean: take out permanent filter and rinse. Once every two weeks I clean the plastic holder for the filter. And a few times a year give the whole inside a wipe-down.- Steam exhaust has been improved from our first DCC-1400, the lid on it used to pop open at the end of the brewing cycle, new model has extra venting so lid stays in place.- Water filters are easy to replace and not expensive on eBay (about $2 each)Cons:- Not easy to see how full the water reservoir is, you have to peer into it from above as you fill, need good lighting. (Newer models have a level you can see on the outside)- Lid is tight (tighter than on our first DCC-1400). It's not too tight for normal adults, but if you have arthritis or weak hand muscles be warned.- Programming is very 80s using hard-to-read small LCD. But we don't change the setting so it's only a pain if the electricity goes out.

Tried and true
I've recently redecorated my kitchen to a red theme, but am stumped about my coffee maker. You see, I bought this coffee maker 2 1/2 years ago and I can't let it go.My husband and I drink a lot of coffee. On weekends, we drink coffee from morning to night. And in the winter? It's a 5 pot-a-day season. When I buy coffee, the cashiers often think that I run a restaurant. I decided long ago that cheap coffee makers weren't for us. After I thought I had found my dream coffee maker with a fairly expensive Krups, only to be let down twice within a year by the machine malfunctioning in the same idiotic manner and poor customer service, I gave this maker a try.It has outlasted any coffee maker we've ever had. 2 1/2 years and STILL going strong! We had to replace the lid about six months ago since the gasket wore out and I was unable to find just a gasket. But other than that, it's been nothing but consistent great pots of coffee.I wish they made it in red! I know they make a glass carafe model in red, but I love the thermal pot too much.If you have any doubts about the reliability and the life of this machine, let those doubts go. Buy this machine, and good coffee is on the way!ETA: 10/31/15 - Just came across this review in my profile and thought I'd give it another update. This coffee maker is still kicking, still brewing delicious coffee, and still as reliable as the day I bought it. 2+ pots a day, and all it needs is regular cleaning. Never had a malfunction, and other than replacing the gasket on the thermal carafe it has had no problems. If it ever does, I hope they still make this coffeemaker so I can buy another one.

So far I’m very pleased with this coffee pot. I used to wake up in the morning and most of the coffee would be gone but this is a larger pot so I’m guaranteed to get my morning cup. It also has a filter that gets changed every three months and it makes a big difference in taste

Attractive and space enhancing.
Keeps coffee warm up to 3 hours. Too small opening to fill the reservoir. Compact and takes little cupboard space. Attractive.

Coffee is not hot enough.
I bought this coffee maker because I wanted hot coffee to stay hot for a long time. The temperature is never quite hot and under the 1-4 cup brew setting, which is supposed to make it very hot, the temperature is actually colder than the regular setting! The coffee also tastes bad and always comes out weak.
