1937, Spain is in the midst of the brutal Spanish Civil War. a "Happy" circus clown is interrupted mid-performance and forcibly recruited by a militia. Still in his costume, he is handed a machete and led into battle against National soldiers, where he single handedly massacres an entire platoon. Fast forward to 1973, the tail end of the Franco regime. Javier, the son of the clown, dreams of following in his father's career footsteps, but has seen too much tragedy in his life - he's simply not funny and is only equipped to play the role of the Sad Clown. He finds work in a circus where he befriends an outlandish cast of characters, but as the Sad Clown he must take the abuse of the brutish Happy Clown Sergio, who humiliates Javier daily in the name of entertainment. It is here that he meets Natalia, a gorgeous acrobat, and abused wife of Sergio. Javier falls deeply in love with Natalia and tries to rescue her from her cruel and violent husband, unleashing Sergio's jealousy. But Natalia is torn between her affection towards Javier and her lust for Sergio. With neither man willing to back down, this twisted love triangle evolves into a ferocious battle between Sad Clown and Happy Clown, escalating to unbelievable heights in this absurd, shocking, irreverent and unforgettable film.

Ups and downs with twists
I was sold on watching this movie after only three seconds into the trailer.

A friend of a friend whose a movie buff told me to watch this because it had an interesting plot. I found it pretty despicable overall and didn't enjoy watching it. For background, I like most horror movies, but I really don't want to watch an abuse victim get abused and, yeah, it just didn't click with me. I guess its made alright, and I'm sure some people enjoyed it so I won't give it 1 star, but I don't recommend it either.

Difficult to place your finger on it...
The Last Circus, or as it's entitled in spanish A Sad Trumpet Ballad, gives what I've come to expect from Magnet films. Superd effects, graphic violence, and dark humor. The Last Circus is a difficult movie to review as it plays on a level of insanity not found in many other films. Movies like Ichi the Killer and A Clockwork Orange, while both insane, are insane in a specific way. The Last Circus provides insanity the way it is in reality, with very little sense. Basically, the fight for love between to opposites of men forces each to the breaking point. A sad clown who is twisted by his mind and a "happy" clown who can't face the way life falls around him battle over the love of a dancer in their circus group.A very well made film it doesn't quite have the emotional resonance I feel it was reaching for. Still, a very solid film with surprisingly good acting and, as stated, fantastic effects, it is a film with looking at for anyone who is a fan of horror or disturbing oddities.

Scary funky
The DVD comes with an English language option - trust me, while okay, stick with English subtitles. The voice-over was badly matched to the original characters and it is the original voice tone, emotional inflection, and so on that really makes the characters so much richer. I know people here have already described this to pint of over-kill, so I will focus on film "type". Foreign made film - and they have a much richer history of expressionist deliver whereas, USA can be a little static. So some good abstractions here but none that I felt lost me at any time or took away from the film - all watcher experiences gelled at the end, nicely. Wonderfully insane work here. If you like films like "Man bites Dog" or - are generally familiar with foreign film, I just don't see where you can go wrong with this one. Lots of "Whoa!" and "Oh eww-ewwwww!" moments with the gory parts or stunts, but contributed to the real emotion of the movie, where too many get depleted by it. It is one that I will pull off the shelf and re-watch over the years - and that really means, I got my $$ worth.

It was ok....took a few tries
Ok so maybe over the top is good for some people and I really liked that strange song towards the end, the clown he was watching in the theatre but I just think it is just too meta for me, as not having that history but who has enjoyed a couple of De Iglesias films without needing a history degree. But this seems almost dada or absurdist and it is kind of like the frantic silent films and twirling moustaches with railroad tracks and the maiden who does just die eventually. But then what is left to direct the frustration, anger, political rage, even at the film itself and what is anything?

If you ever wondered what a collaboration between John Waters and David Lynch would be.
Really good movie, if you like really weird movies. A Spanish Comedy-Noir, about a love triangle involving clowns, set in 1970s Spain. Definitely go with the sub-titles. They don't perfectly match, but they're close enough. Very dark, comedic, tragic, exciting, operatic, brutal, subtle, slapstick... pretty much crazy.

Great Movie
I bought this movie after reading up about it and it did not disappoint. What I appreciated the most about it the movie was that in addition to the bizarre and twisted battle between the two clowns, was the Spanish Civil war. It made it that much more interesting for me. The only problem I that I had was the subtitles. A good majority of my movies are in subtitles but with this one I found myself having to pause often to understand what was going on because for me it went by quickly. Other than that I enjoyed it very much, it's definitely not a movie for everyone, but for those into foreign films and don't mind a little bit of blood. It is worth a watch.

This is even stranger than the cover art.
The Last Circus is a story of love, obsession, dependence, and revenge set during Spain's fascist Franco regime. The extreme lengths that the two rival clowns go to in order to win the affection of the mutual love interest, and to spite each other, is surreal, horrifying, and darkly hilarious. I'd love to tell you more, but this is a movie whose strongest impact comes from surprise, so I don't want to spoil anything for you.

the last circus
Worth more than 5 stars. Wonderful entertainment told by an excellent cast of a superb story. The brutality of the Spanish Civil War leading to the corrupting of lives and effects of brutalisation on one's future life are told brilliantly. a real weepy at the end. Cannot praise it enough.
