Old English Whimsy wrapped up in Dark Deeds and Sorcery
If you like whimsy you'll love this, if you're not a fan of whimsy this may not be your cup of tea. It's not so much written as painted. These stories are playful, set in a sort of yesterwhen that the jacket pins down to 1800. It's rather full of roaring fireplaces in taverns located in hamlets just beyond the potentially haunted woods across the hill in a quintessentially English landscape. In this environment Mr Pixum, The Teapot Man and Bertie Fox go on adventures investigating stories and mysteries that come their way. The style has quite a visual sense such that I found myself able to picture, in the finest detail, the scene as Mr Fox scampered into the walled garden searching out resources for one adventure. Our heroes find themselves up against fantastical and arcane opponents where they have to resort to combat, stealth or sorcery as well simple sleuthing so as to overcome their opponents, save the day and generally put things right.
