Wonderful little device -- totally love it!
Bought this cool little Synology EDS14 device for our home network storage/backup needs. Totally bullet-proof and reliable, and has no moving parts at all -- I just slid a good SD storage card into it, plugged into our home router, a few quick setup steps in Windows, and voila -- everyone in our home now has a network drive that shows up on their computer, and which can be used for any/all storage and backup. This device also has many other cool functions that I haven't yet tried, including running Logitech Media Server (for home audio/media distribution throughout your home via Logitech devices), cloud storage, etc -- it's really amazing. The desktop window interface (Disk Station Manager) is extremely easy to use as well, and auto-updates its software too. I wish I'd discovered this device a long time ago! It's wonderful for all sorts of home networking needs, and I find it to be worth every penny. Absolutely love it. Well done, Synology!

Great for small surveillance
I used this lat year as a surveillance station for a single mobotix camera in the woods . Powered only by solar energy, it works with an external USB drive and can record months of video. It's hot here in SC and I'm still trying to figure out how it's still working . If your looking for two camera storage, which the synology nas comes with, you can't beat this . You can purchase camera licenses and add more cameras. I'm not sure of the limitations on that .

It was immediately recognized on my network and I LOVE it!
I could not get mine to be recognized by my Network so I sent it back. I think it was defective because I instead ordered a Synology DS216II+ which runs the same operating system and software. It was immediately recognized on my network and I LOVE it!. My advice is to buy the full blown Synology NAS. The basic models plus a bare harddrive are only a little more expensive and you get everything this device offers plus the ability to have real RAID.

This is an excellent device to create your home network NAS
This is an excellent device to create your home network NAS. I wish it had more USB 3.0 port and also if the USB hard disk could be made as RAID.

I have always been a fan of Synology and this model EDS14 is perfect for the user that wants a simple photo host NAS with the ability to complete file transfer. I was able to plug in a 5tb USB 3.0 desktop expansion drive to it and create multiple user to upload their mobile photos safely and securely. Thank you Synology!!

Nothing but problems with this. Loses connection, software hard to get the nas working properly. My Netgear ReadyNas on the other hand was a breeze to set up and is 100% more reliable than this. Regretful purchase.
