There was a reason ESG sold so many books around the world...
5-star story! 3-stars for the publisher's laziness... = 4 stars.Erle Stanley Gardner was an extremely prolific author and the consummate master of his genre. In my opinion, his work is timeless and should still appeal to today's readers. There were some elementary OCR proofing errors which made me think the publisher did not even bother to proof the OCR text. Pity... it would have been a simple one-pass proofread to catch the OCR errors.

Risqué risky
Excellent Perry Mason from his top decade, the forties.A touch dated, though. An important female character is running a blackmail racket good for a fair middle class income, but nothing to write home about. In order to keep her racket going, she has to hitchhike rides with men at the rate of twenty a day and more. Getting pawed is part of the game -- and because she's a "bad girl," I think the reader is not supposed to worry about other problems she's almost sure to run into, hitchhiking at that rate. Rape is only one of her worries. A fraud like hers could not be carried out that often without attracting the attention of the law. In the forties, it might have seemed plausible that men with expensive cars wouldn't be murderers. No longer. But that's a minor part of the plot, really, and the rest of it ticks along in the Mason mysteries' usual implausible but persuasive way. The murderer is a nice surprise.

Another great Perry Mason story
I have been watching Perry Mason for almost a 1/2 century, but only lately have I got into reading the books. This case appeared on TV in a somewhat more sanitized version "virgin" became "Vixen". Obviously, the book went into greater detail than the hour TV show could go. These are not great literature, but solid novels nonetheless. It iwas an enjoyable read. I recommend it to others who like this genre.

Smooth writing bringing all to a false positives but.......
Seems that Mr. Stanley's words kept me glided to the wrong persons. When will I learn to look at all facts in total before giving in to the correct answer.

British spelling
I am not sure why these Perry Mason books were transcribed into ebook format using British spellings but it is very disconcerting. As usual, the ebooks are in serious need of a proofreader as there are numerous typos. It seems to me this shameless disregard for a quality presentation reflects badly on those in the ESGTrust. The novel itself was only so-so.

love it
I know that a lot of people is not a big fan of Perry Mason because this series focuses more on the court part than other detective novels. But I am a really big fan of this series. I got all the books of Perry Mason and love each of them.

No great mystery
First published in 1948, this is a tale of blackmail, business skulduggery and murder.Mason's client is the co-owner of a successful department store who, with a naivety somewhat at odds with his business acumen, not only picks up a lovely and innocent-looking girl but believes the story she spins. Perry is initially hired to deal with the blackmail, but soon finds himself defending his client on the charge of murdering the business partner he hated. There is some fairly dull and routine court action, only enlivened by Mason's cross-examination of the prosecution star witness. There really isn't much of a case against his client, and an equally good one could have been made against at least one other person, but in the end the wily lawyer pulls a rabbit out of a hat and gets his client his freedom.Easy-to-read as ever, not taxing to the little grey cells, and not all that great a mystery.3.25 stars.

Another great Perry Mason story
I'm a big Perry Mason fan and have yet to be disappointed with one of the stories. The pace is quick, the characters are interesting, and the plot, as you would expect, is convoluted. Some of the dialogue is, unusually, repetitive and there were a couple of typos but I still loved this book.

A young hitch-hicker helps solve the case
One good Gardner's Perry Masson fantasy, which has some unforgetable detective features - a must read ‼
