Persian Grammar

This book became very useful as I progressed in Rosetta Stone (R.S.) because R.S. doesn't really teach grammar. This book is more detailed and nuanced than the "Basic Grammar and Workbook," also published by Routledge. Persian Grammar becomes more useful after you have learned to read, write, and pronounce Persian words. But once you are familiar with Farsi, this book shines and will quickly become an invaluable resource.I initially didn't buy this book because of the high price, so I had started with the Routledge Basic Persian Grammar and Workbook. But when I saw an affordable used copy of Persian Grammar, I didn't hesitate to buy it. It took longer to get through this book, but every chapter has a wealth of information. This is a great grammar reference book! If you are a serious learner of Persian, this book is worth the advertised price. It's probably not the best book for day 1 because this book is detailed, but once you know some Farsi this book becomes incredible!

John Mace did wonders for Anglophones wanting to learn Persian through books. In order to appreciate this book, you must have a basic understanding of the Persian language and its pronunciation, but Mace does a pretty good job of transliteration/transcription for the non-linguist. This is a good pronunciation resource book for beginners.One must still have some type of basic familiarity with certain pronunciations in Persian/Farsi before attempting to fully appreciate this book's value, although it is not absolutely necessary for a seasoned linguist. Mace includes BOTH colloquial speech applications, as well as formal and historical applications and/or origins of words. He discusses some of these at length to better clarify modern usage.Each chapter is broken down into grammatical reference, with further references to other chapters that help clarify use and meaning. This book is absolutely fantastic. You need a pretty good understanding of English grammar to comprehend the more in depth grammar points of Farsi but that would be true of any grammar book. This book describes in great detail the ins and outs of the Farsi language. The Author, John Mace, does an excellent job at not only explaining the finer points of Farsi Grammar, but also delves into the rarely touched topics of word-building with a plethora of suffixes and prefixes with examples as well as the ever so elusive topic of identifying Arabic roots within the Farsi language. He does a superb job with all his explanations. I gave this book 5 stars because until now I have not found a more complete grammar reference guide for the Farsi language. If you're a student of Farsi, I guarantee that you will find this book to be an invaluable tool to learning the language and furthering your understanding of the more complex grammar points of Farsi.

John Mace's instructional writings on Persian and Arabic are justly well-known, and the current work maintains the high standard of the previous works. The book under review is easier to use (and more up to date) than Lambton's book, which most of us used in our studies. I also found the groupings of the various topics in Mace's book to be more convenient. What I would like next is a revised version of Mace's Teach Yourself Persian, which could link references to the present grammar for more detailed explanations. Incidentally, both books could benefit from a CD or audiocassette to teach the sounds and intonation of the language.

I use John Mace's MODERN PERSIAN (Teach Yourself Books, 1st edition) as the main textbook in my Persian classes, because, as I said my Amazon.com review of it, as far as I'm concerned, it is the best textbook available for beginning Persian classes in American universities, but as a supplement, I use Mace's PERSIAN GRAMMAR. This text allows my students to achieve a deeper understanding of Persian grammar without their being overwhelmed by the esoteric grammatical terminology found in some other texts. Too, PERSIAN GRAMMAR updates some of the dated material in MODERN PERSIAN.

Very good - a lot of rules and lists that I did not know. Easy to flip back to in order to reference and easy to read for learning.

This is a very good short reference book and well organized. I'm sure there are more comprehensive Persian grammar reference books out there but this is a good one for the beginning-to-intermediate learner.This would be an excellent complement to a product like Rosetta Stone or other teach-yourself product.

This book is an excellent work about the written form of the Persian Language. It has both Persian sayings an poetry transliterated into the Latin Alphabet and in Persian Script and English translations. It includes translations of excellent Persian poetry.

All in all good, not too hard to understand, but not entirely correct. For example it states that there is no way in Persian in passive to say who did this (the equivalent of „by“), but of course there is. But on the other hand lots of new phrases and words to add to your vocabulary and make you more fluent. Both formal and colloquial language are presented. A good complimentary ressource to course books and a tutor.

Ottima grammatica, ma sono necessarie delle conoscenze almeno basilari della lingua, ad esempio, per quanto riguarda la pronuncia e l'alfabeto. Sono presenti alcune imprecisioni e, da autodidatta, ho dovuto fare affidamento a dei conoscenti madrelingua per capire a fondo alcuni argomenti.Nonostante tutto, è una grammatica che mi è stata molto utile nel mio primo approccio con la lingua persiana. Consigliata!
