Incorrect description on Amazon, but still a great buy.
Just got it yesterday, and the first thing I noticed upon opening it up, is that there is no 32 page facsimile of the Book of Vile Darkness, but a 32 page Player's Book (which includes players classes, variants, options, feats, etc) that comes included with the 96 page DM's book for the BoVD (as well as the poster map). Both books include a ton of great "fluff" material. The DM book contains just what I was looking for as far as providing some great options and ideas for a truly evil villain for my next upcoming campaign. There is much more helpful info in the book as well including some nice monster, and ideas for creating great story hooks and campaigns around the ideas of evil, or having evil players. Plus, it includesan adventure centered around the "Book of Vile Darkness" artifact. The Player's Book seems as though it will only really serve a purpose if you have players playing evil characters. I played in an evil campaign once before and this Player's Book would have been helpful then. The poster map seems very thin and flimsy, but I will certainly attempt to use it (although I prefer my Chessex battle mat).I'd say for the price, it is certainly worth giving it a shot. As a DM, I am always look for another supplement to fuel my mind with more ideas to make my campaigns even better. But do remember, the Amazon description is INCORRECT. There is no 32 page "Book of Vile Darkness" that comes in this, but a 32 page Player's Book that is designed for the idea of players that want to play evil options or variants.

Not so Vile Darkness but disturbed and shaded
The idea of this book was great and I liked the one that came out for the 3rd edition as well. The only part I think they dropped the ball on, and it probably comes from it being owned all the way up the chain by Hasbro, instead of when TSR was a company all its own, was that it was really PG-13 in its flavor. I was hoping for something a lot more along the lines of "Piercing of Control" or something like "leather armor of bondage" etc. Though some of the thoughts were fun conversations around the gaming table get a lot more dark (and in turn, funny) than what was found in this book. I hope they are able to do an adult on line only option for the Next version when it comes out. The fluff material was a good little gimmick but not a big selling point.

I agree...however
I agree with the previous reviewer on all points, but with one caveat. The 32 page players book that comes with this product physically resembles the BoVD if you are just looking at the front and back cover. Obviously the content is not the content of the BoVD, but I think that this is probably what the product desription was referring to.

Fear the Darkness!
Don't buy this book. Unless you have the strong will to make your campaign more sinister to your group of players! Many nasty ideas come reading this supplement, and is very easy to fall in temptation to use them against a naive group of adventurers.

Book of Vile Darkness
I actually bought this book by mistake - however after receiving it I looked through it and was glad I bought it anyway. It comes with an awesome reversable map that extends way out - plus the two books it comes with are a nice addition to my set of evil.

Worst 4ed Product I have bought so far...
Money grab... That is all I can think. WoTC must be hurting, with the way things are going right now, and are just trying to stay in the green. Because this is a turd sandwich of a product.Unnecessarily paper backed main volume, of less then 100 pages, of almost complete fluff. (as already stated) Not to mention the companion book being separate from the main, is a gimmick that I was not impressed with. It can not make up for the lack of content and pour book craft.I mean, the 'Dragon Magazine Annual - #1' has about the SAME total page count, and PRICE, but FAR SUPERIOR content, and a HARD BACK.And throwing in a near useless paper map is like toasting the bread before spreading the fecal paste on the crispy slices...Yummy...Not again WoTC. Not again.

love it. Soon I will have everything ever made ...
If it is 4th edition dungeons and dragons, love it. Soon I will have everything ever made for that game.

Very interesting to create some evil characters
It is an interesting book, but not as detailed as I would have liked, plus I never really liked the D20 system.

Different - helpful if running an 'evil' game.
This is basically a dual splatbook - one for PCs one for DMs. The PC is styled after the 'actual' Book of Vile Darkness artifact which adds a nice theme to it. It explains non douchebag ways of playing as an evil player which is helpful - especially if the player thinks; 'evil = do what I want all the time' The DM book has lots of options and ideas for campaigns of a 'darker' tone as well as a short adventure with a battle map included. However the map isn't of the same quality as the map packs and has quite limited re-use due to being quite 'cluttered'.I would not say that this is essential but if you are running a dedicated 'evil' game then you could do a lot worse than shell out for this.
