A book that was difficult to put down
Excellent insight into the therapeutic process and the importance of the therapeutic relationship in healing. Content was clear and clinical vignettes were effective illustrations of the material.

This book is a real gem!
This book is a real gem! The authors, who are both highly respected clinicians and researchers have produced something truly unique here. At one level it's a systematic guide to dealing with therapeutic impasses. Any therapist concerned with issues such as patient resistance, transference and countertransference, working with hard to reach patients, patient anger and hostility, and so on, will find this book invaluable. At another level, this book provides a remarkable review of cutting-edge developments in contemporary psychoanalysis and spells out their clinical implications in a clear and precise fashion. Anyone who is interested in finding out what's happening in relational psychoanalysis (perhaps the most important development in psychoanalytic theory and practice to emerge in this generation), will find this to be one of the clearest and most coherent expositions available. And finally, this is the only book I know of that focuses extensively on the role of MINDFULNESS PRACTICE in the training of therapists.Readers who appreciate this book will also be interested in the authors' training DVD "RESOLVING THERAPEUTIC IMPASSES" which is available on Amazon.com.

One of the best "how-to books" on what works in therapy!
I am a practising pshychologist and I've read numerous books on "transference", "counter transference" and the "therapeutic alliance" (everything from Freud to modern theorists) but nothing comes close to this book: It's very informative, higly structured and precise. It has tremendous practical value for all therapists (regardless of theraputic orientation, though it might even be of "extra value" to the CBT-therapist) especially if you "get stuck" when treating a patient or if you're treating "personality disordered" patients. Good balance between theory and case examples. Also of great help if you're a therapy supervisor!

Brilliant book it has completely validated my understanding of the therapeutic process. In particular the relationship between therapist and client and the process of change through emotional attunement and the importance of both the therapist and client as contributing to that relationship and change.
