Underrated brand. Powerful sound.
I researched dozens of budget bookshelf speakers recently when upgrading my 2.0 home theatre system. It seems Boston Acoustics products are not as widely reviewed as other brands such as Pioneer and Polk. Based on a couple of positive reviews I took a shot in the dark on these speakers mainly due to their price at the time. I am in an apartment so I wanted speakers with enough bottom end so that I wouldn't need a subwoofer. The 6 1/2" drivers on these speakers deliver low end, in spades. With moderate volume sub 150Hz frequencies can be felt across the room making for a great home theatre experience. Right out of the box these speakers had a very crisp high end, perhaps a bit too bright for some. After a month and half of use the overly bright highs have mellowed out as mid range frequencies became more pronounced. These replaced a pair of Paradigm Atom v3 speakers which I always thought sounded great but in retrospect were missing a lot on the bottom end having only 5 1/2" drivers. I really like the classic look of these speakers in comparison to their modern counterpart, the Boston Acoustics A 26. if you're after a modern, glossy look those speakers offer comparable sound with an updated esthetic. Overall I am very satisfied with these speakers and don't think I could have done better on my budget.

Clearer description would help.
The speaker itself is very high quality, and I love the sound. I'm very happy with it. I wish, however, that the product description had been clearer. It would be nice if there were some very clear statement that the price listed was for ONE speaker and not a PAIR of stereo speakers. I don't know how common it is to buy just one bookshelf speaker. To be fair, the picture is only of one speaker, and there is nothing in the language indicating that there is, in fact, a pair of speakers in the box. But, an affirmative statement saying ONE SPEAKER ONLY would help.Thanks.

Good sound but I thought they sold in pairs so I had to buy again and it cost twice as much as I wanted to spend

inexpensive for a reason
These were cheap and they sounded that way too. I loved the Boston acoustics A26s but i hated the gloss black finish they came with so i saw the cs26s and the stats were very similar. That was where the similarities stopped. There is no comparison between the two. I promptly returned them and spent more on some Polk ati's.

worth every penny
First note: these do not come in a pair. I see that asked a lot. I still think they are truly worth every dollar. I have an old circa 2003 Sony receiver running these with a bluetooth adapter attached. The sound that comes off these are very loud and not thin at all. I will say there is some lacking on the low end, but again, i can't dock a star for that: they are bookshelf speakers. If you give a little room on the backside of the speaker you get better depth. You really should take some time positioning these speakers....even the untrained ear can hear the difference with these when not pointed/positioned properly. Play around with it once you get them set up. I have mine about 8 feet in the air, and due to the shape of the room they were in, I tried various positions and found each one had a different sound. If you are looking to upgrade from the standard $50 yamahas (which i'm not knocking, i use those outside), then I recommend getting these. The money is worth the sound.

So glad I did
Did some research on bookshelf speakers and decided on these. So glad I did. I listened to about 8 different sets of speakers. (Polk, PSB, Warfdale etc.) Could I of paid more for speakers, yes. but the sound out of these in comparison to higher priced speakers was was well worth the purchase. I made this purchase purely on reviews and the reputation of Boston Acoustics. Still new (only played for about 6 hours) but the sound is great for my living room.A buddy was asking me where the sub woofer was. Maybe he was a bit slow, but the sound was that good. I keep them about 9 - 12 inches from the wall.I definitely recommend these for a smaller apartment.

excellent at 2.0 or 2.1
value for the price. a 6.5" woofer puts excellent bass for its vented size. I built a subwoofer that adds bottom oomph, but the bookshelf hadadequate bass response for a small living room. at $129 each, you're paying for a premium sound in its most classic sense.
