A little tough to read as a parent, but it seems to have helped my son.
I bought this was my 4-year old son was diagnosed with ADHD-HI. My son likes the book and really relates to Shelley. It's been a great book for talking about his feelings about his preschool and peer issues. While there are a couple lines in here that make me as a mother cringe and want to skip over (other kids not liking or wanting to play with Shelley and him not liking himself., etc), I think my son likes hearing that Shelley had the same feelings he did. We pursued diagnosis when my son starting to withdraw and describe himself as a bad kid. So as much as I don't like reading those lines, I think they did help my son feel not so alone in his feelings. In the end Shelley gets medical help (and medicine) and realizes with the help of his parents and talking therapy that he's not a bad kid. He grows up and makes lots of friends too.WARNING: Shelley does get medication, so if you are in the anti-ADHD-medication camp, this is not the book for you.

This was not a good fit for our situation
This is a good book and has a good message but is not the right book for my son. He is a 1st grader and recently diagnosed ADHD. And even after extensive testing they say he is borderline and is only a 50/50 chance that is what is causing his lack of attention. Hard to tell if he is just a high energy boy who is young for his grade and therefore a little more imature. Time will tell. But again this book didn't fit for us so I never ended up reading to him. He is doing great academically and socially. Only issue is with sitting still and getting independent work done. And with this book I didn't want to introduce him to the idea or worry of other potential problems that aren't part of his experience.Still trying to find a book for children that introduces the concept and basic ideas about AD/HD without seeming like the child is doing something bad or something is wrong with them.

A MUST HAVE item if you have an ADD/ADHD child
My 6yo son was recently diagnosed with ADHD and this book is SO incredibly helpful. We had known he was struggling with his self esteem in school but resisted treatment and medication. When we finally gave in, we used this book to introduce his diagnosis and he was so receptive. He was shocked and screamed out “That’s ME! I’M Shelley!!!”Highly recommend. Takes a lot of pressure from the parents to explain it all.

This explains my behavior!
This is a great book for young children ages 6-10, to read and learn a relative explanation about their hyperactive behaviors. This is a tool to assist children know they are not alone.

Loved this book!
Right on the mark as far as content. This book was fun and informative and helps open a dialog with your child about how they are feeling. The characters are perfect, the story is wonderful and my five year old and I really enjoyed it. Well worth your time and money!! I love the fact that turtles are always considered so slow and Shelley can't seem to sit still. It's great stuff. I am also a special education teacher and I use this book with my students too!

Reassuring
I got this for my 5 year old son who has severe ADHD, as well as a couple of mood disorders. When I read this to him, he found it very reassuring and made him very happy. He was thrilled to know that someone else understood and was like him. It also helped to ease my and my husband's stresses and helped to remind us that we too were not alone.

Love It!!
The moment I started reading this book to my 5 year old he identified with Shelley. This book is not too long and kept his attention. Nice way of breaking down ADHD to a child and helped him to understand a little bit more. Shelley has been added to our bedtime reading routine! I shared it with his doctor who loved it and will be recommending it to other patients as well.
