National Lampoon's Animal House

This is one of many flicks my dad and I bond over--it's even better when my stepmom emphasizes how much she hates it! It's been a while since I've seen this gem, so a few scenes I forgot about made me laugh (I mean "laugh hard enough to induce wheezing" laugh) as if it were my first viewing. Easily in my top 10 of favorite movies!

I watched this film when it was first released. Seeing it again brought back such fun memories. The cast was wonderful, the writing very funny, direction perfect. If you attended a four year college experience and went to a fraternity party, these antics were classic. This movie still makes me laugh out loud.

Animal House has not aged well. John Belushi's physical comedy is still funny (I think so, anyway), and I still think sheer outrageousness and ridiculousness can be hysterical, but this movie has some racist, homophobic, and sexist elements that are actually meanspirited. It was never meant to be sophisticated - and the part of the film that is a take down of all that is pretentious in academia still works. But it's uncomfortable to watch.

National Lampoon magazine was started by a bunch of graduates from Harvard. It grew into a hugely popular publication known for its humor and satire. It led to several movies including Animal House which might be the best spinoff of them all. The film was about a bunch of misfits who lived in a college fraternity who got into so much trouble they decided to give up on everything and go totally crazy. The film was a spoof of the lilywhite college life that Americans were supposed to aspire to.The stereotypical college kids are presented by Omega House who are all stuck up preppies who looked down upon everyone else. They represent the all American white middle class universities were supposed to create.Then there’s Delta House. Music is blasting out of the windows and everyone is partying. These are the kids who are going to college but are still immature and don’t know what they want to do with their lives. They are the Animal House and their hijinks are what constitutes the majority of the film and its comedy.Animal House is still funny to this day and was an amazing inspiration to high school and college students across America.C

The dean of students told Bluto Blutarsky, played by John Belushi, "You don't even have a grade-point average." It's a complete pity that Mr. Belushi later overdosed on heroin and cocaine. He was one funny guy.There was one actual food fight in my undergrad Crown College dining hall at UC Santa Cruz. My roommate and I had been shopping in downtown Santa Cruz, and we arrived on the city bus after the stupid thing was over. The cafeteria staff looked thoroughly annoyed, and we did not initially understand why. That was just stupid on the part of the participants.

We all did "questionable" things in college. If you didn't you either lived at home or never left your dorm.This movie is a classic and a great way to share the college warnings with your kids without using your own stories!Can we dance with your dates? "Yea so let the big guys dance with your date or don't go places where you don't have backup"Mr Blucowski--- zero point zero. "Go to class everyday"That's ok, I am only 13 - "not every girl that is around campus is campus aged. Ask.""You know what this means---road trip!" - not all events call for a road trip. Especially bad grades."Remember - it's a movie. Not a drinking game"Ok dad.

In the ongoing journey of familiarizing my wife with the movies she missed due to lacking cable as a child, we arrived at "Animal House." It holds up well after nearly 40 years (dang... that long?). Not as consistent or solid as later Landis/Ramis works, but it's kind of cool to see their styles and voices evolve. Lots of actors you know today in tiny roles (Kevin Bacon's first film role, for example...). The jokes hold up well, particularly if the time and setting are taken into account. Belushi has some of the best bits, often without uttering a word. A must-see for film comedy aficionados.

Remember when this first came out. It's still fresh and funny. This is a movie that will p--- off a lot of 'politically correct' people and that's one reason I like it so much. Great cast, the extras are a lot of additional fun, and the writing is brilliant.

Most films in National Lampoon's canon are interesting, funny in a fairly juvenile way, and you sometimes feel they are for Americans only.This little devil, however, was amongst the first they made, and bucks all those later trends. You can easily watch it once a month, the humour is broad and black at the same time, and it's got such universal appeal, I've always wished I'd still been at Grammar school when it came out, so I could've tried a few tricks from the movie here. Unfortunately, I'd have been a peculiar retard to still be there aged 27!!One good reason for its' success is the excellent weaseally performance of John Vernon as Dean Wormer. His crypto-Fascist efforts to squash Delta fraternities fun and excesses have remained ursurpassed, even by Alan Rickman as Sheriff of Nottingham in Prince of Thieves-talk about the pantomime villian incarnate.But, of course, it helps to have a hero to match and finally outwit that villian. Luckily, it isn't an anaemic and tree-hugging one-it's the one and only John Belushi. There's probably no point in anyone else being on screen in every scene he's in-he just dominates events quite wonderfully.I'll leave it there & not spoil the ending-let's just say the final battle between the WASP's and the anarachic Delta frat is something to behold, and beats Star Wars or Lord of the Rings hands down!

This is my 4th copy of this film. two videos and a cd over played over the years. Wife going nuts but I just like this movie. Countin over 320 times viewed since 1982
