Well made, attractive earphone preamp
Compared to other electric guitar earphone amplifiers, this FiiO is very well made and has useful tone and "overdrive" controls. The 1/4" built-in plug is not ideally designed for the Stratocaster-style socket (it sticks out in a vulnerable way) so I attached mine to the face of the guitar with stick-on hook-and-loop tape and use a short patch cord to connect between amp and guitar socket--this gets the amp out of the way but leaves all the controls in easy reach, and allows me to remove the amp to charge it or use the combo. Using earphones was clumsy with the long cord getting in the way, so I plug an 1/8" stereo extension cord into the amp and then into a separate powered speaker (also FiiO) and play that way, with volume turned down, for practice--this still allows recorded songs, mp3s, etc., to be played through the amp and speakers while playing along. The controls allow for OK sounds and distortions, with some "growl," though not what you'd necessarily want to perform with or record. The one drawback is the tendency of the amp to shutdown the amp circuit if no signals are detected for a (too) short period of time--it does this to conserve battery power. I seem to have fixed this issue by leaving the volume knob on the guitar set to max, and then using the volume controls on the speaker and amp to set my practice volume. All in all, a great way to get practice time in without wearing out the tubes in your amplifier or keeping your neighbors up at night and ready to lynch you...

Not bad at all.. First one I have ever owned or used..
Ditto to what Andrew said.. Cant add much more to it.. I just got it yesterday and I too use it for Bass Guitar.. I am no sound expert and a beginner Bass player but it sounds decent to me.. Of course not like it will sound in a $800 Stack but for what it is, I think I will use it a lot.. It seems solid and well made(Dont feel cheap or anything to me)Just a note.. When I first tried it I was like.. This thing SUCKS but then started messing around with the controls and then all the sudden I found the "sweet" spot.. So if you try it, you have to find the sweet spot.. Took me about 1 min of messing with it to find the spot..Have not tried it yet with a MP3 feed.. Will do that later..

Great little headphone amplifier!
I plugged this in to my bass and within seconds was ready to go in absolutely silent practice! I was seriously considering between the Fiio G01 or the Vox Amplug Bass. But reading reviews of the Vox led me to believe that its construction wasn't as sturdy and it was almost $50!. My only doubt was that the Fiio was designed for guitars not a bass. however, I went ahead with it anyway and I was so glad I did!It sounds great, is built very well and the internal battery means no forking out more for replacement AAA or 9V batteries! It charges quickly through USB. It was very easy to dial in to get the sound I wanted with the tone, and overdrive knob.Update: (6 months later)This little device is still working great! Battery lasts about 20 - 30 hours approximately so at an hour to 2 hours of use a day this means about 2 weeks of use between charging. I've showed this off to other musicians and all agree its a great tool to add to your practice arsenal. The tone control on this doesn't do too much (but I adjust it on my bass anyway). One of the best features is having the Aux in jack so I can play right along to MP3's with ease.2nd Update :(2+ years later)This is still chugging along with no drop in quality or battery life. I still use this for 20-30 hours a week and have been doing so pretty much since I got it 2 1/2 years ago. The 1/4" jack is a little looser but its not threatening to fallout or anything, it still works fine, I just have to be more gentle with it. Once again, an excellent product that stands the test of time. Highly recommended.

Mine's really hissy
I like almost everything about it, except I can't stand using it because it is really really hissy with or without a signal. I may have to send it back. If it weren't for that, I'd probably really like it- and use it. The only thing that is missing that I can see, is maybe an aux-in volume. But I've got that on whatever source I'm feeding it, which is probably why it was not included (but that way it might function without the instrument as a headphone amp). Other than that, great little design in a nice solid package. Good price point too.

Almost perfect, great purchase.
I love this little amp. It is sooooo much better than the Vox AmPlug I also own. Top notch build quality similar to FiiO's other headphone amps. The Vox feel very cheap in comparison. Another key difference is that the FiiO has a permanent rechargeable battery versus the Vox's use of AAA's. Pros and cons for both methods, but I prefer the rechargeable solution personally. The plug pivots out with a button in much the same way many new car keys now do. This is nice not only for storage, but also to provide some play if you accidentally bump the amp on something to minimize damage to it or the output jack on your instrument. With the gain turned all the way down, the tone is VERY clean. So much so that I forget that it is even turned on. Turning up the gain adds a noticeable hiss along with the distortion, but nothing you wouldn't expect out of a traditional amplifier. My only real complaint is that the dials for Volume, Gain, and Tone are on the bottom edge of the Amp (same as the Vox) and are proud from the housing. This makes it very easy to brush them against your leg or hip and mess up your settings...and potentially blow your ears out. I would love for these to be recessed.

Pocket sized practice amp!
Great little Headphone amp & had it now over a year. It's been all over the UK with me & even to Spain, where I can play at anytime & upset no one. Good to have the capacity to mix your guitar with a sound track & add a little overdrive to your sound too. Recommend the G01 if you wanna play your electric guitar anyplace, anytime, recharge lasts very well, also very neat that the jack folds away & completes a good pocket sized practice amp!!
