Max Long lived in Hawaii and did a lot of research on the Kahunas. He not only reveals the secrets of the Kahunas, but the secrets behind the secrets.After he explains the different philosophies of the Hawaiian Kahunas, he illustrates them with real life cases, most of which he witnessed himself. He also analyzes the healing techniques in the context of current psychological findings of his time, theosophy and religion.One of the most interesting concepts that he brings up is a connection between the Hawaiians and the Berber tribe in North Africa, in both language and shamanic teachings. This adds credibility to his theory that these Kahunas migrated to Hawaii from advanced civilizations in Egypt.This is probably one of the best books available on the of the Kahunas' philosophies.

Loved the book!

I first read this book soon after I heard of it years ago and now own his complete series. The one I ordered is a second copy so that I can loan it. Shamans today do not go as deeply as the kahunas of Hawaii. This book is an introduction into Hawaiian shamanism, though it is not called that. WRitten in English that may be a little difficult at first, it is well worth the effort to find the gems included. DEA, Boreadean Order of Druid and Feryllt

This is a must read book for those wanting to know themselves better. "Themselves" is used advisedly, as we are all really 3 persons in one. Understanding this can make a huge difference to understanding yourself and others.It was written decades ago, so you have to be prepared to forgive the style of writing and the format of the publication. As it is so fascinating, this is not a problem.

Max Freedom Long's books are an excellent source for learning about Hawaiian culture and prayer before the missionaries arrived and tried to eradicate it. I highly recommend them as a beginning study of Hawaiian mores and a study of their 'Gods' of sea and land and survival.

There is lots go good information presented but the author gets sidetracked into his quest, other studies and contacts. His book - The Secret Science At Work, is much easier to read and understand.

It is a must for everyone who is interested in how things really work. Valid backstage informations about kahuna magic and spiritualism, but still cherishing the mystical point of view. I like that it is scientific, but in the respectful spiritual way. Enjoyed every page. Great book, haven't read this kind of a good book in a while!

Max Freedom Long is a well known writer and expert on Hawaiian shamanism. This is one of his best books.

Well written and well documented. You are left wanting a deeper understanding and further instruction. I will definitely look for more of his books.

A classic book that all the modern 'Secret - Manifestation' type books have ignored to their detriment. If you are interested in psychology, hypnosis, spirituality, manifestation, this book has the Science, not the wishful thinking and new age pop culture theories of so many over hyped publications today.

Wenn Longs Werk auch etwas von den Lehren der Huna-Schamanen abweicht, so war er doch der Pionier des Huna außerhalb Hawaiis. Auf jeden Fall sollte man dieses Buch gelesen haben, es ist weniger ein Praxisbuch, aber das theoretische Wissen über die Entdeckung dieses alten Weges ist nicht uninteressant und zwischendrin findet man so manche Perlen, die Anregungen für eigene Forschung geben.

I was very pleased to find Max Freedom Long's books in print again. This was well received as a gift by someone interested in these matters but had not heard of Max F.Long
