A flavorful and healthy alternative to white rice!
This is a healthy rice and a better alternative to even brown rice because it is loaded with sntioxidants, Vitamin E, fiber, and has a delicious, slightly sweet, nutty taste. The rice is a deep rich black color when raw but when you cook it, it becomes a beautiful shade of purple - as does the water - so be careful not to splash!.I like to use this in salads and even as a breakfast cereal mixed with oats and raisins; a little stevia and cinnamon makes a yummy and nutritional start to our day! Like many of the dark fruits, black rice is loaded with anthocyanins or antioxidants, which are showing real promise for fighting cancer, heart disease, and other diseases. One serving of Black Rice has as many antioxidants as a single serving of cultivated blueberries. Black rice, is easy to prepare, but takes just a little longer than white rice and is every bit as versatile as either white or brown rice, if not more so. You can use this rice in everything from Stir Fry's, and breakfast cereals, to exotic desserts.

Once you go black...
... you will never buy brown rice again. Love this whole grain black rice, also known as "forbidden rice". It tastes nothing like brown or white rice. It has an intense nutty almost chocolatey flavor. I can eat this plain as a meal, it is that good! Popular in Chinese, Thai and Japanese cooking. The grains are long and slender when dry but the rice plumps up sweet and sticky. Use in savory dishes as you would short grain brown rice or in desserts like rice puddings. I find it needs more water than the 1:2 ratio. It also helps to soak the rice overnight or at least 8 hours. Be sure to tend to it while it cooks as I often find myself having to add more liquid, unless you're using a pressure cooker. There are two different types of black rice. The more common variety is white on the inside and only the outer hull is black. I felt like I hit the jackpot when I ordered this and realized this is the far more rare variety of Chinese black rice with both outer hull and inside grain being black. Black rice contains the same antioxidants as blueberries, which gives it its color and is therefore more nutritious than brown rice. The bag contains the recipe for a traditional Japanese dish, black rice with sweet potatoes and scallions, one of my favorite recipes. I boil the rice in Japanese dashi, stock made with bonito flakes, kombu seaweed and dried shiitakes.I also like preparing slow cooker rice pudding with coconut milk and a hint of almond extract. Delicious both warm and cold, with a sprinkle of Chinese 5 spice.

good rice
Some of my family members didn't really care for this rice but I think it is very good. I used it in a recipe for black bean and rice soup and it was delicious. It was very reasonably priced as well compared to other vendors.

Unique, Tasty, and Well-Priced, but Only Ideal for Certain Culinary Preparations
Not my favorite rice "varietal," but it did okay in a pinch while the company was out of the long grain wild cultivated rice. The black rice is gummier, even when made in my foolproof rice-cooker, so its texture is not ideal for the salads that I like, this rice does have a nice, lightly nutty flavor and would be ideal for burritos and some other Latin America dishes that benefit from the pastier consistency. This would also be a great substitute for white sticky-rice in Asian dishes, too, so keep that in mind. It's not as nutritionally loaded as the long grain wild rice, but the price is $6.00 less, so, depending upon what dishes you plan to make, this is nice to have in the pantry but, in my opinion, not a suitable substitute for ling grain wild rice.

Broke out if rash right after I ate it
The flavor was great, but I broke out in an itching rash right after I ate it. They don't accept returns so it is a big waste of money. Plus now I am stuck with terrible itching.

rice has a weird consistency
i understand that this is supposed to be very nutritious, but it has a very weird consistency--it doesn't look or taste like normal rice--takes a lot longer to cook and tastes like wild rice; tastes a bit grainy sometimes

Delicious "Immortality" Rice!
Asians consider natural black foods (somewhat rare in nature) longevity enhancing, in fact the Daoists considered this to contribute to immortality so this was reserved for royalty and emperors! You'll see why when you try it. Sweet, delicious, higher in protein and antioxidants than other rice. I've been using the recipe on the back of the package (substituting onions for scallions) and adding a little fresh ginger and curry. I use coconut oil. I haven't even tried any other recipes because it's so good and adds the health producing effects of sweet potatoes which help balance hormones and blood sugar. I cannot recommend this enough. It's a great product and fine company, I enjoy it so much and can't believe I get to have healthy, tasty rice regularly now without worry about something spiking blood sugar too much. You'll love it!

Black Rice Bounty
Black rice is wonderful and this black rice is very nice, indeed. I order it online because I can never find it in the store and if I do, its costly. This rice has more nutrition packed in the same serving as you would have in brown or white rice and it has a good nutty, slightly sweet flavor. Use it as you would any other rice, the gorgeous color is startling - the water becomes deep purple as soon as you stir the rice in - and goes so well with any dish. Don't cook other things with it unless you want it to look purple. I cook this rice adding a little grapeseed oil to the water. I also like to season it with a nice chicken broth, or just a little salt and sesame oil. So good!
