Very inexpensive but good crankset. This is the low end of the Shimano line, but possibly the peak of Shimano value. This crankset is light and durable. It's also very well made. Fit and finish is excellent, and the pedals installed easily in the well tapped holes. The downside of this crankset is the riveted C rings. You can't change the gearing by swapping C rings, nor can you replace the C rings when they wear, but this crankset costs less than a couple of new C rings, so you pick buy the crankset with the gearing you want (this is a standard mountain bike crankset gearing that is probably what was on your bike when it was new) and you replace the entire crankset when it's worn and no longer serviceable. Repair is by replacement. It's a quick and easy repair if you have a crank puller. Pro Tip: A worn chain can wear out your C rings and worn C rings can ruin a chain. Replace your chain when it starts to stretch. You can get a chain wear gauge to monitor chain wear. Use good quality chain (it's not that expensive, and it's less expensive in the long term than cheap chain). Replacing the crankset, chain and freewheel at the same time is a fairly quick and inexpensive repair/upgrade that can make your old bike feel new again.

Do not attempt to mount first!
Make sure that you've ordered the proper size. If your not too sure and you order anyway, DO NOT EVEN ATTEMPT TO MOUNT. Compare to old size first. If you even attempt to mount then try to return it to this vendor, you will be denied a return or exchange for it will be considered used. I am now stuck with something that is worthless to me. Live and learn I guess.

Pleased to see such quality and careful design
The FC-M171 looks beautiful. The product (48 38 28T with 175 mm cranks) matched the photo perfectly. The cranks are finished in a somewhat rough to the touch black coating. The machining for the pedal threads and spindle connections is excellent and shines like silver. Two snap in plastic crank bolt covers are included. The people at the factory must have cared about what they were doing, since precision shows throughout the crankset. Stamped with, "SHIMANO 175 MALAYSIA VIA OC." The bash guard is made of thick, rigid plastic, so I am confident it will be stronger than necessary to hold up to commuter cycling on my hybrid 18 speed bike. The product is better than expected and made a fantastic first impression. It spun freely on a 120 mm sealed bottom bracket for an 18 speed, steel framed, hybrid bike. No interference from the small chainring to the frame.

I'm able to keep up speed much better now.
Upgraded from a chain ring that had 42 teeth on the large gear on my Mongoose Ledge 3.1 29". The front derailleur just barely clears the large sprocket. I was able to move the derailleur up only so far because of the rear suspension. This also upgraded me from 170 mm to 175 mm crank arms. I'm able to keep up speed much better now. Other cyclists on the road were blown away when I'd overtake them as I'd pedal at a much slower cadence than they were.

The teeth are not perfect whatsoever.
I haven't had the chance to write a review. The teeth are not perfect whatsoever.

I bought this to replace the crankset that was damaged when my bike was ran over by a vehicle. I did not purchase the crank removal tool. I was able to remove the old crankset using my air chisel because I did not have to worry about damaging it. To this who need to reuse their crankset, definitely get a crank removal tool.

Good Crankset for the Money
This crankset is easy to install, works very well on my 1987 mountain bike, and is reasonably priced. I've already ridden it over 1000 miles and it's still almost as good as new.
