Speakers start to distort after turning the volume up
I've had this speaker for a year and a half. It sounded good for the first week. Then the center speaker started to distort and sound metalic like. If i push the center speaker in with my fingers the distortion goes away for a day or two. usually it starts to come back a little at a time at which point i have to push the speaker back in to make it sound good. Spoke to sony when it started to happen and they wanted me to send the unit in and pay for shipping. read alot of reviews and most people were having the same problems even after getting it back from sony repair. I think there is a problem with the actual speakers and it is probably not going to be fixable other than to get another brand. Its a shame, the unit looks and works great other than the distortion. As for dolby atmos, i dont really care about it. The movie2 mode does a really good job of emulating the surround sound and when their is no distortion, the quality is amazing. If you decide to buy this or the ht-5000, no problem, just make sure you get a 5 year warranty. You will need it.

Performs as advertised
Setup was a breeze. ( Im a techie). Sound was OK with regular broadcast. I was a bit disappointed at first as the sound was nothing special, especially compared to my top of the line Bose soundbar. However, when I played some 4K content from U tube, I was Blown away! The sound was now dynamic and powerful. I then realized this is a very accurate soundbar, unlike my Bose. In comparison the Bose is colored sounding, but still pleasing. With the Sony, garbage in garbage out. Being an audiophile I prefer accurate, but the Bose has its place. My Bose cinemate has better "surround sound" if you will. The sony is not bad, just not as good as the Bose it the sound effect department. I am happy with my purchase although I think 1500 is a bit much for what this bar is. The Bose Cinemate cost the same and I feel it too is overpriced. However this is the price of the game if you want one of the best soundbars out there. At half price it would be great. Im giving five stars because the unit does perform as advertised and does it well.Edit 10/20/15My review was based mostly on TV audio.. Watching starwars DVD was just shocking. The audio filled my entire living room and the unit sounding like I had speakers all around the room. Incredible!

Going from the Ht-st 7 to the Ht-st9
Previously owned the ht-st7. Going from that to the ht-st9 is not that big of a leap. I mean the sound does sound more clearer than the ht-st7 but that is too a very good sound bar in clarity. What i do love about the st9 more is because of more sound fields. What the st7 doesnst have is internet capabilitiesl and hdmi 2.0 and the st9 does. One complaint i do have about the st9 is the subwoofer. It doesn' t shake my room as loud as the st7. The st7 subwoofer is 100w and the st9 is 200w. How does the st7 have a better subwoofer? The st7 had 3 tone volumes for its subwoofer and the st9 doesn't have it. Sony screwed up. Made the st7 sound more dynamic. But overall i like the st9 a lil more. Like i said more sound fields especially for gaming. St7 didn't have that. The hdmi port are 2.0 for 4k passthrough. Its internet ready for spotify and updates. Has mirroring for android phone. Sounds clearer. But i will say i think the st7 looks more stylish. Noneless im happy with my purchase. If your deciding between these two and dont care about internet compatibility and dont have a 4k tv, id go with the st7.

Did sound great - now after 6 months, several speakers distorting
I've actually quite enjoyed this sound bar. As other have pointed out - it's not as loud as I had expected it to be compared to several other receivers and surround sound systems that I've put together over the years. But connectivity is great and switching works pretty well. The sub-woofer really performs well as long as you're using some of the sound-fields (especially when watching movies.)I'm giving the system only 3 stars because it's not compatible with my either of my new Intel NUC computers I built for HTPC duties. (NUC5i5RYK or NUC5i3RYK). When switched to output 4k at any refresh rates/sync - all I get is a screen that blanks out repeatedly until it finally stays blank with an unsupported resolution. If I connect my HTPC directly to my 4k TV (Vizio M70-C3) - it works just fine. (My new Sony STRDN860 receiver works fine as well...) Support from Sony said "Your graphics card isn't supported) - but there was no troubleshooting and no real dialog with support. In the end - I bought this particular sound bar because I wanted HDCP2.2 and HDMI 2.0 / 4K support. And so far - I'm hoping there's an update to fix it...** Update 3/22/16 **System now has distortion coming from several of the "surround sound" speakers at any volume. This seems to have happened with others:[...]This is regardless of sound source (BT, HDMI, Network streaming, RAC, etc.)I will say that with some updated drivers and/or updated firmware with the soundbar, I'm able to get 4K resolutions to work. That's a nice update! Except that it's now excruciating to listen to anything in Movie Mode (which is really where the surround sound kicks in for movies and TV)Sent a request to service - but you also have to ship this quite heavy and bulky speaker system at your own cost to a repair center. Hopefully I'll get some sort of decent response.
