Dr Lucien Blake left Ballarat as a young man. But now he finds himself returning, to take over not only his dead father's medical practice, but also his on-call role as the town's police surgeon.

A great change of pace
Not like American crime-solving TV shows. This focuses more on character development and not chases and frequent life-or-death circumstances to see how the "star" will survive. A slower pace that some may not like, but I enjoy the emphasis on the characters in place of harrowing action experiences.

Never lets you down!
Dr. Blake cares not who in the power structure he ticks off or threatens. His goal is to find the truth in each murder. His allies are of strong character and are fiercely loyal. In addition to being a police surgeon, he has his own medical practice in which he exhibitsmuch skill and genuine compassion for his patients. The casting and acting are superior! Thisseries leaves you hugering for more!

Human and Flawed
Doctor Blake is so human and flawed which makes this much more interesting to watch. He bumbles and is a do-gooder, but doesn't realize the consequences of his choices until it is too late. He drinks too much to ever wish him to be based on a real doctor, that would be scary. You just want to hug him and tell him things will work out. Love all of the actors in this- some of them are familiar from other ABC productions.

Great Series BUT check your REGION BEFORE ordering
We SOOO ENJOY A LOT OF THE BRITISH/AUSTRALIAN Shows. Love our Dr Blake but my only CAUTION is when ordering... If you are in USA/CANADA....ORDER REGION 1.... I wasn't aware of Regions until I hastily ordered this and a Big Caution on video said if I was NOT REGION 2 which I think was UK/New Zealans...to Not open and return. I did return but didn't get my FULL refund. Yes... I did reorder Region One and LOVE IT!

Save your money!
I did not like the main characters. They weren’t likeable which killed the entire season. I will not purchase any more Dr. Blake Mysteries.

Excellent
Discovered this series by accident on an online TV channel. Absolutely love it. Set in Australia in the late 50's. Every story is a murder mystery and throughout the series is a "will he - won't he" romance unfolding with Dr Blake and his houskeeper. I could only watch Series 2 online so immediately set about finding the other 3 series (1,3 and 4). Am eagerly awaiting the release of Series 5 now. If you like a good old fashioned murder mystery without all the gore that seems to flood our screens these days, then give this a try. I'm sure you won't be disappointed

On Call
I stumbled upon this series completely by accident. I saw Craig MacLaughlan dressed in 1950's suits and thought, "what's all this about?" Forget 'Neighbours'! Forget all the pop stuff! This is Australian drama at it's very best and then some! Fair play to the aussies they know how to put together a gripping drama, and Dr Blake Mysteries is definitely in that awesome category. Well written. Well acted and most of all there's that element of surprise at the end. I'm definitely a fan! Deserved 5 stars!

Classic crime drama
This is an Australian TV series they've been showing on daytime TV in the UK, but to my mind its more Sunday afternoon drama. Really compelling characters and interesting to see a different setting. You'll fall in love with the community of Ballarat and it's troubled yet brilliant doctor.

Lucien!
One of the pieces of fun in this period drama piece is trying to place the Australian actors. Another is figuring out how self-destructive Lucien Blake is, or how long it will take for the obvious feelings growing between him and his housekeeper to come out into the open. One of the best pieces of fun is wondering how many people live in this small 1950s Australian town to be murdered! But that doesn't stop the show from being a very highly crafted, well acted, well photographed, well scripted and overall highly enjoyable set of murder mysteries, in which a radical doctor who hates tradition and is suffering from PTSD from his time in the Korean war brings his talents to solving crimes. Which isn't to say that he doesn't get blinded by his own prejudices and get things wrong. Sometimes you find yourself shouting at the telly "Lucien, don't be an idiot!"It's lovely stuff. Looking forward to the second series.

Understated series that grows
Set in 1950's Ballarat, this series is low-key but a well developed episodic set of crime capers, all centred around Blake and his mysterious past and family. The best performance throughout the three series is from Nadine Garner, who plays Jean, the housekeeper, clearly deeply in love with Dr. Blake who alas, is less observant and self-aware in private than in his professional life. Garner's portrayal is beautifully nuanced, but you will have to buy the three series in the hope that their futures will be revealed! These are not high action thrillers, but some of us like a more considered pace and character development. This delivers.
