how durable is this?! battle ready?

OOOOOOH yes, it certainly is, like all the M48 series. Very solid blade and the staff portion is very durable synthetic. I weigh about 300 lbs and can use the naginata to do pull-ups; it easily holds my weight.Check out the M48 Double Bladed Tactical Tomahawk, and the M48 Sabotage Tanto Fighter Knife as well. Interestingly the Tanto can also be exchanged with the blade of the Naginata.

Can the head be switched with the head of the M48 Tactical spear? I would basically just be buying this for the longer pole.

The heads are not interchangeable.

Does the handle have the traditional teardrop cross-section?

From my examination, it appears to be elliptical, same as the war hammer, talon spear and sabotage spear. Hope this helps.
