Noisy fan, slow performance, not tooless drive install
The fan is noisy. oddly enough if the back is off its silent. remove it or snip the leads off. Either way its REALLY annoying.I created fusion drive with SSD samsung 850 / 500gb + 2TB 7200 drive.Only get 385mb/sec. OS10.11 on new 2015 MBP TB2 port. SSD in eSata case gets 500+mb/sec. So there may be 2 batches of these drives out there - ones that meet spec and ones that don't. you might get either one ( my guess ). drive should hit full SSD speeds. I can see based on activity lights on front which drive is being read and its the SSD during speed tests.. drive is empty right now.TB cable is short, about 18". might work for you, might not depending on application.Looping thru TB port works ok.While this ad leads you to think this is tooless drive install, its not. 2 thumbscrews for back, drives are in brackets that use 4 standard drive screws. was hoping I could quick swap drives when I needed to... but not.So while this is better than bare USB3 performance, its well short of the claimed 770mb/sec.

Awesome enclosure
Only had this for a day now, but so far so good. The quality is excellent for the price. The enclosure has a solid build, small form factor, and looks nice, even if it looks like an older style Mac Pro case. The interface seems fast (sorry no benchmarks yet) and I am running with a Crucial MX100 512GB SSD.Why not 5 stars? The included Thunderbolt cable is a little on the short side, but the AC adapter is plenty long. The fan is also noisy as others have mentioned. If you have music on you won't notice, but otherwise it could get a little annoying. It's the pitch more than the volume. Yes I'm being picky. If I find a replacement fan I'll try it, but I can't find any as of yet.I plan on getting great service from this setup for my Lightroom collection.

Easy to setup, fast, works fine, too loud for SSD enclosure
It was easy to setup and get my drives installed into it. It is very fast and connects easily. The included thunderbolt cable is very short so unless you are setting this right next to your computer you may want another cable. My only real problem with this enclosure is the tiny fan it has. Tiny fans are notoriously loud and this one is no exception. The fan is louder than any spinning disk or even my MacPro. You can easily disconnect it if you wish to have peace and quiet.

Great for fast external storage.
I used this enclosure to create a software RAID 0 array with two Samsung 850 EVO 500 GB 2.5 inch SATA III SSD (MZ-75E500B/AM) drives. I am using this with a Mac Pro and used the GUI Disk Utility program to format and set up the RAID. Blackmagic says 756 MB / sec read and 694.1 MB / sec write. Even though it is "only" Thunderbolt and not Thunderbolt 2, the drives don't seem to be hindered. The array exceeds the rated speed of a single drive by about 50%. The difference between this and a spinning disk is very pronounced. It is breathtakingly fast. I use it for editing photos using Aperture. As fast as I can scroll the screen in Browser view, the thumbnails of 17 to 22 MB RAW (NEF) files pop into view instantly. There are more than 5,000 files in that project, BTW. If you work with large numbers of RAW photos, this is a great setup. Applying adjustments to a large batch of photos is very fast, and allows for a nice, smooth workflow.I have also offloaded some games to free up space on the Mac's internal SSD, and the games run fine. No noticeable difference launching the game via an Alias in the Apps folder as opposed to having the game on the internal.I considered getting the LaCie little big disk 1.2 TB Thunderbolt 2 external drive, which is essentially the same thing, just faster. For less than half the price, this array suits my needs very well. I guess if you need the absolute fastest thing on the planet, go for it. Yet for the $ difference, one would have to do one's own calculation. The fan noise is negligible. It does not get hot. The enclosure is cooler than the Mac to the touch.

Noisy, slower than expected.
Nicely made, but the fan noise is ridiculous next to a Mac mini. After an hour I had to turn it off - it was giving me a headache.Unimpressed by the performance. Appears I'm getting the same 385Mbps read that others have noted. A $25 Plugable USB 3.0 SATA dock I tried with the same SSD got 436Mbps - I expected better from a Thunderbolt 2 device that costs 10X.Guess its now a nice aluminum paperweight.Update 1/17/2015My wife walked into my office tonight while I had this turned on and immediately asked "What's that annoying sound?"Update 1/27/2015It is quiet now - my wife noticed. I removed the fan and tipped the unit up 45 degrees to help the natural cooling (heat rises). Barely notice any heat from the single SSD I have in it at this time so I think this will be a reasonable interim solution until I find 1) a quiet replacement fan, 2) a faster thunderbolt 2 enclosure, or 3) put the SSD in a USB enclosure.

Works as expected...maybe a bit slower. Read below.
I have a Samsung Evo 840 500GB drive in this, hooked via Thunderbolt to my new Mac Pro and I'm getting read/writes in the high 300s. When I had the same drive in my old 4,1>5,1 Mac Pro (via the Apricorn Velocity Solo x2 Extreme), I was getting read/writes at 500MB/s. Maybe the PCIe bus in my old computer was faster than Thunderbolt? If so, pretend I gave this 5 stars.Prior to receiving it, I read others complaining about the noise of the fan, so I disabled mine before firing it up for the first time. No heat problems.

Fast but won't last so make regular backups.
It lasted slightly over 3 years. Capacitor appears to have blown. It's a PCB with really no way to repair. Keep your backups current. I was little bit behind but not too bad of a loss.

This little box rocks! With one SSD (Samsung 850 Pro 512GB) I am pulling 4 streams of ProRes in a multicam Avid edit with no hiccups whatsoever.BMD disk test reported around 365 MB/s write and 375 MB/s reads. I put in a second matching SSD (software RAID-0 in Mavericks) and the disk test is now reporting 675 MB/s writes and 750 MB/s reads. The only mark against this unit otherwise is the high-pitched fan whine. Doesn't take too long to blend in with the other noise in the room, but it is there.
