Great for expanding your vocabulary and spelling
These are great for building vocabulary. The paper isn't the strongest but it's better than regular index cards and I guess you could always laminate them if you're using them in a class setting or going to be using them constantly. Unless you're stuffing them unsecured into a backpack or using them with with young children-which probably wouldn't go over too well anyway- then I think they'll be fine! I definitely prefer flashcards to a book format because I'd just be making flashcards anyway if I got a book. They have some examples of words that use the root on the card. The text is also written in different colors depending on whether the root is from Latin or Greek, which is a nice visual cue and makes it a bit easier to remember if you WANT to remember which language the root came from. I actually got these for my child because I frequently get asked how to spell and define words. Now my child doesn't need my help quite as much and is able to just enjoy reading a bit more.

Great vocabulary builders!
Great cards! I laminated them, punched holes, and put them on a ring. These will last through both of my kids using them from kindergarten on through upper elementary. Before having kids, I taught high school English; I swore that whenever I had kids I'd teach them Greek and Latin roots beginning in kindergarten. The time has come and these flash cards are extremely helpful in that endeavor! If you're purchasing for a high school student who is relatively organized, the cards will probably be fine as is. Since I plan on using them for years to come with two young boys, they needed the reinforcement of lamination. I purchased both volumes of flash cards -- there are 100 in each box.

Old look BUT Great tool
Yes this product has a very ‘90s look but it is still a great resource! Easy to use!

Roots/prefixes education in a box!
I recently started using this flashcard series to tutor 4th-8th grade students on the building blocks of vocabulary. It's a great introduction to future SAT words. I have taught PSAT/SAT for years and if every student could learn roots and prefixes in school, it would make high school English and the SAT so much easier! I combine "English from the Roots Up," "Prefixes and Suffixes" workbooks, and Princeton Review's "WordSmart" book for my vocabulary class. The roots words are short and fairly easy to remember. I add in a story about the background of the word, and it helps the kids remember the vocabulary as well. Since I am teaching this class at home, my 8 year old sits in on the vocab class and even he has absorbed quite a lot of roots and difficult vocabulary words just from listening in. It's a pretty painless way to increase vocabulary because the kids learn how to decode the hard words.

Clear way of teaching roots, improving vocabulary
I have been looking for a way of showing my 6th graders that knowing what basic words, roots, mean can improve your vocabulary; and this is the best I've found. On the back of each card is a simple, one- or two-word definitions of the root and then 7-9 words that contain that root along with what those words mean using the definition of each word part. For example, "skopeo" means "look at, inspect, consider, examine" and "microscope (mikros - small) - device to look at small objects" and "periscope (peri-around) - device for seeing around obstacles". As you can see by my examples, the examples of words using the roots often are words that use 2 or more roots to show how you can figure words out if you know the meanings of both roots.

Awesome tool to study PSAT vocab
My son just started using these cards to study Greek and Latin Root words. He(a 9th grader) took PSAT test before we got these and got his score yesterday. He missed 5 vocab questions, which is big deal in this test. After he reviewed what he had missed, he said, "mom, now that I know more Greek and Latin root wordsI could've gotten most of these answers right"There are books and flashcards, but a few reviewers said that flashcards were more helpful to study.I absolutely agree with them.I and my husband are ESL learner so sometimes we can pick a few cards each to study and rotate the cards between 3 of us.Sometimes my 5th grader learns a word or two and thinks it's not too bad. Much less intimidating than dealing with pageful of all big words. We love them and would recommend to our friends.

Great for Teaching Kids and Adults
Bought these for my granddaughter. Learning the material with the flashcard method makes it more enjoyable. We often pass the deck around the table making it a game. Overcame the soiling/thickening of the cards over time by laminating the cards. Using a hole pinch at the upper left corner, then connecting the entire deck with a $4 SS gate latch cable. Wish the cards came from manufacturer this way. Since they don't - did it myself. Expecting many years of use by several grandchildren now that they are protected. (See pic)

Excellent
I am using these for my 8 year old daughter this year in our homeschool journey. She loves being tested on the Roots and talking about the words that come from them. I used this curriculum in high school but I think that it is not to early to expose your kids to the concept of root words and will help them for the rest of their lives as they read and then in the future of tests like SATs and ACTs

Not very durable
These cards are quite flimsy and I can see them getting torn and creased with use. I laminated my set and now they won't fit back in the box. :(
