Kicks Butt for Notching Logs
I purchased this unit because we're notching large beams with a wood chisel & skill saw and each joint took about 15 minutes with over-cuts.The tool reduced this time to about 5 min with a perfect controlled notch. Yesterday I noted a used table saw had some rust on the surface and I grabbed the multi tool to sand it off. Also 5 minutes. This will be a very helpful tool in many places. This is a sturdy & feels solid in hand. Even though though powerful, I was re-surprised by how long the battery lasted under use, before the battery drained - about an hour of continuous use & exceeded my expectations ~2x.As for my application - the battery version was far better than the corded versions. Much better for hanging out on roofs & rafters without dragging a cord along. Glad I went cordless.Suggested improvements:1) A lanyard attachment to - tie it off while working high places. Always afraid I'll drop it since it's so powerful.2) Improve the allen wrench slot - the allen wrench went missing in the first 5 minutes. The tool does what is supposed to do and is sturdy, and the value, to me, exceeded price.

Great tool to add to your essentials
Super versatile tool. When I am on the road I have limited capacity for carrying tools. I pick my tools carefully and often have to improvise for some of the smaller or unexpected details. I recently had a job that involved flush cutting trim and plunge cutting rectangular openings in plywood for electrical and plumbing. Since I already had other Makita 18V tools and batteries I decided to give this a try. I also picked up the Bosch Multi-X accessory set and a sanding delta pad base. Now that I have used this tool for a couple of small jobs I wish I had bought it a long time ago. It is amazingly handy for trimming and plunge cutting. This tool combined with a 6 1/2 inch 18v circular saw work great for all of my cutting needs on small jobs. Sure for big jobs I prefer to use tools like an 18 inch chop saw for accuracy and speed of cutting trim but it does not fit in the tool box on my truck. This Multi tool has earned it's place as one of the few power tools I will carry on my truck all the time.

Works Great
I chose this particular model of multi-tool for several reasons: First of all I wanted something cordless - there is nothing worse than the tangle of wires from corded tools when you're up on a ladder or working in a difficult space. Since I already have a nice collection of Makita 18V tools and half a dozen batteries it seemed the logical choice. Second, I wanted a good price. I'm sure the Fein Multi-Master is an awesome piece of equipment, but for the amount of use this tool is going to get, I felt 300 bucks was a bit over the top.I've used the tool now for at least 6 hours and it has handled everything I've thrown at it with ease. In that time I've had to change the battery only once so it can do a lot of work on a charge. So far I've only used it to cut, and not to sand, so I cannot attest to its usefulness as a sander. Two small draw backs: First, the unit I bought (tool only, no battery) came with no case. I like to keep all my tools neat and organized and a good case is always a plus - but for the price I'll grab a good canvas tool bag for storage and transport. Second, although the Allen key needed to change attachments fits neatly into a clip at the base, the vibration of the tool causes the wrench to fall out regularly. It’s only a matter of time before the wrench and the tool get permanently separated - unless I can devise some way to keep it in its place.

Good Tool (while it lasted)
I bought this as a reconditioned tool without a battery. This is one of the most versatile tools you can own. If you buy a Dremel carbide blade it will outlast regular steel blades by 30 to 1.RonToday, 09-12-2015 my Makita oscillating saw bit the dust. It appears that the gears stripped and no longer drive the blade. It lasted a little over 2 years. This is the first Makita tool that I have owned to break down. I bought it reconditioned and it was probably repaired for the same reason mine failed today.Ron

A super addition to my battery kit.
I love the Makita line of Li+ battery tools, not because they're better than Bosch or Milwaukee or Dewalt, but because they have VARIETY and DEPTH in their tool choices. My kit now includes: 1/4" hex impact driver, 1/2" hammer drill, right-angle impact driver, angle grinder, jigsaw, circular saw, reciprocating saw, power plane, multi-master thingy AND...wait for it...a FLASHLIGHT! All kidding aside, this means I have a really useful set of tools that run off of battery power and really work well. I use them a lot and then they sit around for a while. The batteries aren't dead when I go back to use them weeks later, and they charge really fast, too.Summary: If you want a broad selection of quality battery tools, you can't beat Makita's offerings.

I do not recommend this version of the tool to anyone who plans ...
I bought this as a gift for a Carpenter / Contractor. In the first month of use, the head holding the blade bent sideways making it so that the blade could not face forward. I took it to an authorized repair facility. The told me it needed a whole new head, but that they were unavailable since the tool was so new. I eventually picked it up and sent it to Makita by mail for repair. They sent it back. After 30 days, the problem occurred again, but my friend was able to make due with it. Since then, it has continued to rotate out of position. I am frustrated and do not plan to send it back to Makita so that they can resend the same tool back with a temporary fix. I believe that they should have provided me with their newer model that doesn't seem to have this problem.I do not recommend this version of the tool to anyone who plans to use it as part of making a living. It's either in the shop or something for which you'll have make a workaround. I give it 2 stars instead of 1 because my friend doesn't hate the tool but is frustrated that the tool cannot work as it's intended without baby sitting it.
