Initial review: Perfect Cloud Elegance Gel-Pro 12 inch Memory Foam Mattress
After waking up with a stiff, and very sore, back for the last few weeks, a friend recommended I might need a new mattress. I hadn't considered that as the cause of my pain but after realizing my old Sealy coil pillow top mattress was almost 19 years old, I thought my friend just might have a very good point. So I purchased this mattress after spending a couple weeks reading multiple reviews and changing my mind several times. I just received the mattress around lunch time today. This will be a multi-part review and will update as time goes on, ideally after the first night sleeping on it, one week, one month and if I remember, six months. The box arrived slightly damaged (water damage from a heavy rainstorm the night before) and the FedEx guy showed it to me before he pulled it off the truck. He inspected it earlier and said the mattress didn't appear to be damaged. I checked it myself and was satisfied there wasn't any damage. See attached pictures for detail. I think it's important to include this in the review so folks know how well packaged and protected this item will be during shipping if they choose to buy it. Just make sure the plastic isn't ripped and you should be good.As others have pointed out, this item is heavy. I had a heavy duty hand truck ready at the front door and would have had a difficult time moving the 88 pound box without it. It's not just the weight, this is a bulky item at roughly four feet tall by two feet square. But with a hand truck I was able to move it to the bedroom easily.I tore the box open and carefully inspected the plastic. Everything seemed to be OK so I used a knife to begin opening. NOTE: The instructions clearly state to NOT use a knife. However, it was difficult to tear the outer plastic as it is much thicker. I pulled the outer plastic away from the mattress and made the initial cut safely away from the mattress so as not to damage it. I then put the mattress on the bed and removed the rest of the outer plastic. Once I did that, the plastic slid down easily.NOTE: BEFORE you remove the outer plastic, when it is still rolled up tightly, put it on the bed. Once that outer plastic is off, it opens up to full size. It's easier to manage removing the second layer of plastic while it's on the bed already. As soon as you do this you will hear the mattress begin filling with air. I opened the mattress fully and realized it was upside down. The removable mattress cover zipper should be on the bottom. So I managed to flip it over while it was still inside the second layer of plastic. That second layer of plastic is much easier to remove by hand. Once that happens the mattress will fully inflate, so to speak, within seconds. It was full height before I even got the plastic out from under the mattress. There will be a distinct smell. It's not too bad but it is noticeable. I left it as is and do not plan on putting any sheets on it for several hours in order to let it air out. In fact, I'll most likely remove the mattress cover and wash it this afternoon. I also purchased the waterproof mattress cover that comes recommended by Amazon to purchase together. I second that recommendation. It arrived yesterday and I've already washed it, so once the other is ready I'll put both of them on and that should help with the smell. The mattress is firmer than I thought, but this is a good thing. I haven't lain on it yet. I want to give it plenty of time to fill out and I'll try it out tonight. But so far I'm impressed with the packaging (you can see how wet the box got and the mattress wasn't damaged at all), shipping, unboxing and initial impressions. The real test will happen tonight. This is my first memory foam mattress and the first mattress I've ever bought without having tested it in the store first.More to follow....Update 1: After sleeping on this for a night I can say this was better than I expected. My concern is that it would be too soft and I'd feel like I was being swallowed up. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find it just firm enough and extremely comfortable. I also noticed this morning that I didn't have the usual pains (back, neck, feet) that had when sleeping on my old mattress. There was still some discomfort but that comes from being active and over 40.The mattress also 'inflated' if that's even the correct term, in about 7-8 hours, reaching it's full height of 12 inches. In that time I didn't lay on it or even sit on it. I just let it rise on it's own and I'm glad I did. Recommend you do the same if you purchase this item. Two additional things: First I recommend you get the waterproof mattress cover that Amazon recommends is commonly purchased with this item. It's approximately $35 and well worth it. My reasoning? The mattress put off a smell that was confined to the bedroom, but after 7-8 hours I could smell it in other parts of the house. It's not a bad smell but you can smell it. Once I put the waterproof mattress pad on before bed, the smell went away. So highly recommend that item.Second: The removable mattress cover that comes with this mattress is not recommended for laundering. Spot clean only. I wish I had contacted their customer care support PRIOR TO unzipping it from the mattress because zipping it together again was a near impossible task. Don't do it unless you absolutely have to for some reason. Just buy the waterproof version recommended above and launder that one instead. Zipping that thing back on took nearly 20 minutes and it was incredibly frustrating.Other than those things, I highly recommend this mattress. I'm going to provide another update after a week of sleeping on it but after the first night, I was extremely happy with this mattress.

Practical guidance to what the Elegance really feels like
Like many reviewers here, I did a LOT of research before purchasing my Perfect Cloud Elegance, including reading EVERY review here. While there is some good information to be gleaned from them, the one thing they can’t do is tell me how this mattress really feels. What’s “too hard” to one in “too soft” to another, and many describe it as both firm AND soft! And I think I’m not alone in the apprehension I felt ordering a mattress that I never tried based solely on how a bunch of strangers say it “feels” to them. In an effort to help future buyers, I took a field trip to my local furniture emporium here in NYC (Raymour & Flanigan) to find a mattress with the approximate specs and feel of the Elegance. I tested every memory foam mattress they had (and they have a wide range from many manufactures), and I took a lot of notes.Advice on mattress testing from Consumer Reports:1) Bring a pillow from home (REALLY. This is pretty key), and2) test each mattress for 10-15 minutes, changing through the positions you usually sleep in.My 2¢:Write down the specs from the memory foam mattresses you are considering here on Amazon or elsewhere (how much and what kinds of memory foams and base materials.) Then, in the showroom, find mattresses that align most closely with those specs and settle in. Spend five minutes in every position; take notes on how each one feels to you. With a little homework under your belt, you will be able to make a much more informed decision. So… this is my advice to anyone looking for guidance on purchasing the PC Elegance: Grab a pillow from home, go to a mattress showroom that carries TEMPER-pedic, and find the TEMPUR-Cloud Supreme Medium MF. It has about 4” of two kinds of memory foam over 7.5” of base material for a total of 11.5” high mattress. It has quite a bit of that classic TEMPUR “sinking” feeling, conforming to your body, as well as medium support. This is the closest in feeling and specs that I found to the Perfect Cloud Elegance. I think the Elegance may be a tad less “sinking” and a bit more supportive, but my Elegance is brand new and the showroom model has a few miles on it, so that really may be a wash. I also noted that the showroom price of the TEMPER-Cloud Supreme is more than 4x the price of the Perfect Cloud. Now, on to my Perfect Cloud Elegance experience:Smell: almost none. Zip. Only noticeable with my nose right on the cover. This was a non-issue in my case.Unpacking: Yes, this is ideally a two person job, though I (a 6’ tall, pretty fit man) managed by myself. PRO TIP - once the mattress is out of the plastic and starts expanding – take some time to align the bottom corners on the mattress into the corners of the cover. My cover was a little askew, but a little tugging evened it out. I don’t know what would have happened if I hadn’t done anything; maybe it would have worked itself out with no help from me at all. I’ll never know.Heat buildup: I haven’t noticed this as a problem. The feel: I’m not going to tell you how it feels to me since that’s useless to you. I will say that if you haven’t slept on a memory foam mattress before, it feels very different than what you’re probably used to. In a MF mattress, the upper memory foam layers provide various levels of that “sinking” feeling while the base layers provide the support. The more inches of memory foam, the “softer” the sensation, but the base layers all provide basically the same support. It’s just a matter of how much you sink before the support kicks in. You’ll want to find the balance that’s right for you. Also, some mattresses layer non-memory foams on top (like the Casper) which gives more of a traditional bounce-back sensation. Pay attention to how they are constructed and how they feel as you test and you’ll start to make those connections for yourself. The mattresses I tested ranged from 2” of memory foam (less “sinking”, more ”firm”) to 6” of memory foam (rather alarming amount of “sinking” and hard to maneuver around). The Elegance has 3 memory foam layers totaling 4.5”, which puts it in the “medium” category, which was consistent with my showroom experience on similar mattresses, especially the TEMPER-Cloud Supreme Medium.Last look: I love this mattress. I’m moving from a 16 yr old medium-soft super pillow top 15” Kingsdown mattress which had lost its magic in both the support and plush departments. Lately, I had been sleeping very badly and not very long, and it was taking a toll. This is a VAST improvement, and I am enjoying my nights ever so much more. I don’t regret this purchase, and I have high hopes for many years of the same.8 month UPDATE:This mattress was very comfortable from the beginning, but it wasn’t too long before we decided we would like a bit of plush on top to make moving about a little easier. Memory foam is, as my partner put it, a little like sleeping on an eraser–a really comfy eraser, to be sure, but it’s a different sensation than a traditional mattress. So we bought this topper *Live Comfortably Cuddlebed Down Alternative Mattress Topper* which is a GREAT complement to the Perfect Cloud. Now we have all the benefits of memory foam with the perfect touch of plush. Still VERY happy with our purchase. I travel a lot, and nearly every bed I encounter is less comfortable that our Perfect Cloud (only the bed in an upscale Paris hotel gave me consistently good sleep quality, or maybe that was just the magic of Paris). In any case, I come home tired and sore, and the Perfect Cloud revives me in just a night or two!1.5 year update: Still SUPER happy with this mattress. The feel is the same as it was when it first arrived, with maybe a little more of that MF sinking feeling, making it even more of a dead ringer for the TEMPER-Cloud Supreme Medium. We recently had a cat sitter staying in our apartment for a week, and she mentioned how incredibly comfy and cozy our bed was, and how well she slept. Yeah, it’s still pretty sweet to come home to.3 Year update: Yeah, still thrilled with this mattress. It still looks new--no pilling or discoloration, and it's holding up spectacularly.Almost FIVE YEAR update: I can report that the mattress continues to perform and hold up beautifully after nearly five years supporting two grown men. Still no pilling or discoloration, so the cover material is holding up nicely, too. All in all, I still would happily buy this mattress again!
